-Identify Topic: Good for topics that include procedural skills. -Specify Learning Objectives: Relationship between conceptual knowledge and skills is important. Goal should be set for the student to apply and perform the skill. -Prepare Examples: Examples are essential for helping students initially understand the skill. High quality examples are preferred to help the student understand the concept.

-Introduction and Review: Teacher introduces the lesson and reviews prior knowledge and understanding. -Presentation: The new skill is presented and explained with the aid of clear and quality examples. -Guided Practice: Teacher guidance is provided when the students are practicing the new skill. -Independent Practice: Students practice the skills on their own in order to gain automaticity.

-Give the students problems to solve after they learn the new skill. -Change up the wording in the exercise so the students will have to think on their own rather than repeating a memorized procedure. -Have the student provide feedback after they have solved the problem to show they understand the concept.
