Help. Dir. Mary Murphy. PBS, 2009. Film. Cry for Help is a documentary that takes a special look at teen suicide in highs school and college by looking at the cases of two high schools, one college student, and several programs being implemented online and at school. It provides many statistics such as that teen suicides have tripled in the past year, that every 1 in 7 high school students seriously considered suicide, and that 1/2 of college students felt so depressed or anxious they couldnt function. It provides the examples of the mass shooting in which 33 people were shot by two teens and how that event was a catalyst in the spread of suicide prevention programs and the 4 suicides committed in Hamilton high school. Lastly, it states that going to college is harmful since teens are farther from family and it presents that more suicide happens in students that go to college than those who do not. This might help improve my paper by supplying some major incidences of teenage suicide and depression which I can use to prove that teen suicide is happening. Furthermore, it provides many examples of ways that adults and teens can get help or try to prevent teenage suicide.

Horowitz, Karyn. Dispelling the Myths Surrounding Teen Suicide. Brown University Child & Adolescent Behavior Letter 25.11 (2009): 1-7. Academic Search Complete. EBSCO host. 21 October 2013. This article provides evidence to dispel false illusions that the public has surrounding teen suicide. It states that in 2003-2004 teen suicide went up and might continue to do so as it is the 3rd most common cause of death for adolescents and offers up information so that the general population can better identify, prevent, and deal with suicide. It resolves myths such as asking about suicidal thoughts, that taking medication worsens the situation, that suicide occurs without any warning signs, that only professionals can identify a child at risk of suicide, and that media coverage does not affect suicidal behavior. It does so by providing facts and websites to back up their dispelling of the myths. I think this article will greatly help my paper to provide a basic groundwork. The article provides information on all aspects of teen suicide and can help me cover all ideas when I try to raise awareness. Kim, Kerri L., and Daniel P. Dickstein. Relationship Between Teen Suicide and Non-suicidal Self-injury. Brown University Child & Adolescent Behavior Letter 29.5 (2013): 1-6. Academic Search Complete. Web. 31 October 2013. This article is all about the difference between committing a suicidal act with the intent to die and a non-suicidal attempt such as cutting which has now been termed non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). The article states that NSSI is a growing problem but that there have not been enough studies to determine the exact relationship non-suicidal self-injury has to adolescent suicide; but, it states that there is evidence of a correlation. The article

concludes by dissecting the lack of availability of medical treatment once a child who is performing self-harm has been diagnosed. It states that it is a major issue, because even though people seek help there are not enough resources. I believe this article will be able to contribute a certain area of teen suicide that none of the other sources provide. The correlation between NSSI and teen suicide is a very important part of raising awareness since it is one of the more evident warning signs. Therefore, looking at self-harm will assist greatly to preventing teen suicide. Ollove, Michael. Bullying and Teen Suicide: How do we adjust school climate? Christian Science Monitor28 Apr. 2010: n. pag. Academic Search Complete. Web. 21 October 2013. This periodical looks at the death of a seventeen year old Tyler Lee Long due to bullying and looks at the climate in school and how it must change so that bullying in school is no longer a factor in teen suicide. It presents statistics such as: one-third of American kids face bullying and what bullying causes in adolescents. It then goes on to speak of how the United States has begun to really look at this aspect of the school climate and call for change. This can be seen in the sentence: Increasingly, school systems with the support of the Obama Department of Education are turning to comprehensive, ongoing programs designed to improve overall school climate. I believe this will benefit my paper in that it looks at a major part of a teens life: school. This area is known to be a large contributor to teen suicide and therefore looking at this school climate and how its begun to change can greatly benefit my listing of causes for suicide in adolescents.

Rudd David, Berman Alan, Joiner Thomas, Nock Mathew, Silverman Morton, Mandrusiak Michael, Orden Kimberly, WitteTracy. Warning Signs for Suicide: Theory, Research, and Clinical Applications. Suicide & Life-Threatening Behavior 36.3 (2006): 255-262. Academic Search Complete, EBSCO host. 20 October 2013. This article clearly deals with the warning signs and risk factors of suicide. It attempts to inform on the differences between these two things. It defines suicide risk as the presence of any factor empirically shown to correlate with suicidality, including age, sex, psychiatric diagnosis, and pas suicide attempts. It gives examples of both such as hopelessness which is a prime risk factor for suicide and a previous bad history such as sexual or physical abuse. Some warning signs it describes includes clinically identified warnings and poorly defined constructs such as buying a weapon. Lastly, it provides a chart with some attitudes and behaviors that can be used to identify someone whom is at risk. This chart describes attitudes such as, rage, alcohol use, withdrawing from social life, anxiety, inability to sleep, over sleeping, mood swings, and someone who feels they have no reason for living. I think this would better my paper because a main route to preventing teen suicide is being able to notice its initial signs and this article helps define those signs while also taking a look at other aspects of these signals. Society for the Prevention of Teen Suicide. The Society for the Prevention of Teen Suicide, 2011. Web. 31 October 2013. This website is for the Society for the Prevention of Teenage Suicide. Their main goal is to increase
awareness of teenage suicide in teens, parents, and educators and aid in its prevention to decrease the rates of teen suicide. On the website they have videos, chats, social networking site links, and blogs that allow people to get more informed, whether they are the ones thinking about suicide or

Paan 5 they want to help someone. They present facts on the organization and how anyone can help by means such as donating money to the organization. I think this website would be helpful in my essay because it is a prime example of a resource that one can use to reach for help or to attain information to help someone they know. I can use this website as an example organization that the public can turn to when seeking aid with teenage suicide.

Stovell, Karienne. Medication May Help Prevent Suicide in Teens. Brown University Child & Adolescent Psychopharmacology Update 5.3 (2003): 1-4. Academic Search Complete. Web. 16 Oct. 2013. This article summarizes the view of physician David Shaffer on why the rates of teen suicide are declining. He states that it is due to the increased use of prescription medication to deal with causes of suicide such as depression. One such example in the article is Clozapine when it states, Clozapine recently become the first drug ever approved by the FDA for reducing the risk of suicidal behavior specifically in patients with schizophrenia. He presents information on the rising of the use of prescription medicine and his opinion as to why he thinks this is a correlation tied to the declining rates. He goes on to offer that the correlation is difficult to confirm as seen in this sentence, In addition to the difficulties of testing the effects of specific drugs for efficacy in preventing suicide, there are difficulties in generalizing what information is available to children and adolescents. I think this article would greatly benefit my paper due to the fact that it presents information from a much earlier time. This gives the allowance of a comparison from the late 1900s to modern time in its growth in the treatment of adolescent suicide through medicinal means.

Wayne, Rice. Theres a Teenager in My House: 101 Questions Parents Ask. Downers Grove: InterVarsity Press, 2009. Print. This book is a guide to helping parents deal with teenagers in all aspects of life. In it, it has chapters that deal with different issues and questions that parents would like to know. It includes many relevant chapters to teen suicide such as managing a teenagers anger, the ADHD teenager, ideas for consequences, prevention of drugs and alcohol, prevention of drinking, managing their appearance, motivating teens, controlling the influence of entertainment media, and grandparents raising teenagers which are directly correlated to risk factors for suicide in teens. This allows parents to confront/ deal with their teenager in better ways that will not provoke suicidal thoughts. There is also one chapter on what to do when a teen threatens suicide. It states, threats of suicide should always be taken seriously and goes on to explain how to deal with the situation. This will help my paper by providing a source in which I can use to provide help for parents if they think their children are at risk of suicide. Moreover, it can help me dissect how to deal with other root causes of teen suicide such as anger and drug abuse.
