Technology "eeps growing at an e#ponential rate and it a$$ects our personal li$e, wor" en%ironment, and students in the classrooms& 'e$ore the internet, students mostly relied on their teachers and te#tboo"s $or in$ormation& Now, than"s to the internet, in$ormation is constantly at a teacher or student(s $inger& )ith the clic" o$ a mouse a %ideo can be shown or a clip o$ a speech heard& * graph, diagram, or image can be shown& +nstant "nowledge is possible& 'ut with this new technology comes legal issues that were ne%er thought o$ be$ore& YouTube is an internet based resource most o$ten thought o$ when tal"ing about %ideos on the internet& Teachers use YouTube to enhance learning and ma"e education come ali%e& ,ome teachers use %ideos already used to $urther e#plore or e#plain a concept, where as other teachers create their own %ideos or ha%e students create %ideos based on curriculum taught and then share these %ideos on the web& Teachers and e#perts share "nowledge in their area o$ e#pertise, which creates a shared learning community& This greatly a$$ects teachers and students around the globe as they try to master concepts and s"ills, learn more in science or technology, or disco%er a new career $or the $uture& -,tudies show positi%e gains in student outcomes as a result o$ the integration o$ %ideo technology in instruction. /Cuthrell 0 1ones 2 !!2& +t has been pro%en that YouTube and %ideo usage in the classroom has students more engaged and eager to learn /3ierce 2 !!2& This new use o$ technology in the classroom brings a hard loo" at copyright laws& -,chools are granted special permission to use and distribute copyrighted material within the classroom4 this is considered -$air use. and is co%ered under section ! 5 o$ the

copyright law. /3ierce 2 !!2& 6owe%er, when a school posts something without permission $rom the original owner, there is no protection $rom this law& )hen using %ideo technology in the classroom -it is absolutely necessary that the content is care$ully screened $or material that does not belong to the school or any material which may end in a lawsuit. /Cuthrell 0 1ones 2 !!2& This is something educators, administrators, and students need to understand& Clear e#pectations need to be set $or all those using the internet and there needs to be e#plicit instruction to teach students about copyright laws&
