New York State Common Core Standards CC.4.NBT.1 Generalize place value understanding for multi-digit whole numbers. o 4.NBT.A.1 Recognize that in a multi-digit whole number, a digit in one place represents ten time what it represents in the place to its right o 4.NBT.A.2 Read and write multi- digit whole numbers using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form. o Teacher will read the Essential Question o Teacher will say, On Friday we began working on renaming numbers using base-ten blocks. Lets complete an example together to see if we remember how to regroup with base-ten blocks. o Teacher will model 239 using base-ten blocks. Teacher will use chart to write how many flats, longs, and cubes are used. How can we regroup a flat? How can we regroup a long? Even though we are breaking down each base-ten we are not changing the value of 239. o Teacher will say, Today we will learn how to use place-value chart to rename numbers. Procedure o Teacher will present chart Rename Numbers as Base- Ten blocks o Teacher will give 2 examples: 130 and 1,600 o Teacher will have students identify how many hundreds, tens, and thousands there are in the examples. o Students will then identify how many cubes, flats, and longs are needed to represent the numbers o Teacher will ask students to open to page 25 in Go Math! Textbook o Teacher will then pass out Place Value worksheet that is used to show students how each time you move from the right on the chart you multiply the value by 10 o Teacher will explain to students the reference worksheet o Teacher will then complete an example with students on the white board 300,000 How many hundred thousands? How many ten thousands? How many thousands? Students will complete pg 25 #s 5 and 6 independently Closure o Teacher will then put class into small differentiated groups to complete problems o Students will have a worksheet with 3 place value charts for 3 problems o Students will be able to use base- ten blocks o High- Jesus, Xavier, David o Regroup and Rename 1,500 2,350 160 o Middle- Franchot, Leo, Christian, Linda, Jayce, Brayan o Regroup and Rename 29 350 725 o Low- Abdoulaye, Brailey o Regroup and rename 16 35 75 o USE BASE TEN BLOCKS! o After students have completed their problems they will work independently in their groups on worksheets

Tonight for homework you will work on page 11 in your Go Math! Workbook. Follow Up Activity o Go Math! Workbook page 11 Evaluation o Students will be evaluated by their participation during the lesson, contributions during small group instruction, and their understanding of renaming during independent work in their textbooks. Differentiation o Low Students o Will be in a smaller group o For small group instruction will be able to use manipulatives/ baseten blocks o Will work with two- digit numbers o Will have four problems to complete on RTI1 worksheet o Will have 1 teacher to assist o Middle Students o Will have two- digit and three- digit numbers to rename and regroup o Will have five problems to complete on RTI 1 worksheet o Will have 1 teacher to assist o High Students o Will have three- digit and four- digit numbers to rename and regroup o Will have to complete all problems on RTI 1 worksheet o Will have to complete Enrich worksheet o ESL o Will have charts to visually see how to break down base- ten blocks o Will have manipulatives to see how to break down base- ten blocks o Will be able to view chart of place value chart and textbook as a reference o When in small group instruction will be able to use base-ten blocks o Visual Learning Style o Will be able to visually see how to regroup and rename numbers using charts o Will be able to visually see how to regroup and rename numbers using base- ten blocks o Kinesthetic Learning Style o Will be able to use tangible manipulatives/ base-ten blocks to rename and regroup numbers o o o o
