Established Goals (Include ACOS standards in this section): ACOS 8th grade standard 4: Identify cultural contributions of Classical Greece, including politics, intellectual life, arts, literature, architecture, and science. Student goal: To achieve an understanding of the importance that the Greeks have played in the history of Western Civilization. Understandings (Students will understand that ): Athens and Sparta were the cradles of Western Civilization, as we know it today. Athens and Sparta still have influence in our society today due to their experimentation with political and cultural ideas. Spartan military dominance and Athenian cultural dominance led to their position as the two most powerful city-states in the Greek Golden Age. Essential Knowledge (Students will know ): Democracy Oligarchy Helots Hoplite Phalanx The roles of women in Sparta and Athens The educational systems in Sparta and Athens The rights of men in Sparta and Athens Agoge Schools of thought in Athens Agora Parthenon Acropolis Delian League Peloponnesian League Essential Skills (Students will be able to ): Compare and contrast Sparta and Athens. Identify important locations of Greece on a map. Analyze the contributions of Sparta and Athens to Ancient Greece. Essential Question(s): Why have Athenian and Spartan influences outlived their mother cities? Why are the Greeks seen as the beginning of Western Civilization? What methods did Sparta and Athens utilize to become the dominant city-states during the Greek Golden Age? Stage 2 Assessment Evidence Performance Task(s): A time machine has been discovered in your town and the citizens have nominated you to test the machine by traveling to Ancient Greece in the year 450 B.C. However, after you arrived the time machine has broken down leaving you stranded in Ancient Greece with no way back to the future. The cities of Sparta and Athens have opened their doors and offered an invitation for you to live in one of the cities. You must decide where you will move to start a new life in Ancient Greece. Also, you must list three reasons why you did not choose to live in the other city. Other Evidence: Chapter 4 Test (Summative) Venn Diagram comparing Sparta and Athens (Formative) Map Drawing of Greece (Summative) Stage 3 Learning Plan (Include approximate time for each activity in the learning plan) Materials needed for the lesson: The teacher will provide access to netbooks, projector, and Microsoft PowerPoint to show the review and directions for the performance assessment. Students will supply paper, writing utencils, and it is optional for the student to bring their own device. Bell ringer (if one is used): A bell ringer will not be used.

Review of relevant, previously learned information: A quick review will be conducted on through a question and answer session. The projector will show the following four questions: 1) What is the Greek term for city? 2) Which city-state focused its attention on the sea and its trading network? 3) Did Athens and Sparta have friendly relations? 4) What enabled the Greek city-states to defeat Persia? (No accd.) [3 minutes] (R, Ev) Introductory Activity: I will introduce the activity by showing a short BBC video clip to introduce the different lifestyles that Athenians and Spartans had. [5 minutes] (W, H) Body of the lesson: I will introduce the class to and lead the class through a WebQuest on Ancient Greece. We will use the following link to serve as our WebQuest courtesy of Mr. Elliott Hansen: https://sites.google.com/a/mpls.k12.mn.us/southhighworldstudies/classroomnews/athensvsspartawebquest. (No Accd.) [2 minutes] (W) After showing the class the WebQuest, I will explain the activities that will be completed during the class. The class will complete a chart for Sparta and Athens as they complete the WebQuest. This will help the students organize their ideas and information about Sparta and Athens into a clear chart. I will provide an example on the whiteboard to illustrate how to start the chart. Next, I will illustrate to the class how to complete the Venn diagram to compare and contrast Athens and Sparta. The students must find five contrasts between Athens and Sparta and three comparisons. I will draw an illustration of a Venn diagram on the board and give the students an example to help them start their diagrams. (I will accommodate SPE students by requiring them to find three contrasts and two comparisons.) [5 minutes] (W, T, O) Next, the class will begin the WebQuest. There are five designated websites that correspond to Athens. The students will go through each article and read to find information about Athens. The students will fill out their charts and Venn diagrams based on the information that they find.After searching the websites designated for Athens, the students will move on to the four websites that correspond to Sparta. The students will read the articles and fill out their charts and Venn diagrams for Sparta. (I will accommodate SPE students by assisting students in reading the articles and I will provide definitions and explanations for complex terms) [30 minutes] (H, Eq, Ev, O, R) Students will now begin the performance task. Greece with no way back to the future. The cities of Sparta and Athens are competing to recruit you to live in their cities. You must decide where you will move to start a new life in Ancient Greece. Take into account the pros and cons of each. You will write a 125-150 word essay using at least 6 historical facts to provide support for your decision. Also, you must list three reasons why you did not choose to live in the other city. This will be day 1 of 2. Students will complete the performance task the next period if they do not complete it. (I will accommodate SPE students by requiring them to either write an essay of 100 words or orally dictating their answer to me. SPE students will be required to list 3-4 reasons for support of their decision and 2 to explain why they did not choose the other city.) [10 minutes] (Ev, T, R, O) Preview of the next lesson: The next lesson will be a continuation of the performance tasks and the class will debate their decisions on which city they would choose to live in and why.
