Teacher Work Sample 3

Short Range Learning Objective/Standards for Unit

Description:
The 5th grade multiplication unit was developed to advance students understanding of the multiplication process. The unit focuses on the multiplication properties, mental math, estimating, and multiplication of 1-digit numbers, 2-digit numbers, and greater numbers while using strategies based on place value and order of operations. The unit was designed to include independent, group, and partner learning. Direct instruction and modeling are included daily to ensure the students gain the general understanding of the content. Visuals and kinesthetic learning are designed to be implemented throughout the unit, examples such as white board activities, videos with real-life connections, and bingo games. Based on the students prior learning the lessons will be developed appropriately to enhance the students learning. The students prior knowledge should consist of basic multiplication properties definitions, multiplication steps and processes, and order of operations. Activities and kinesthetic learning will allow the students to complete assignments and master the content. The goal for the unit is to include numerous activities to enhance the learning experience and ensure the students have a full understanding of the content. Ensuring the students have a solid foundation of multiplication will help the students while covering future content, division and fractions. The plan provided addressed the standards and objectives covered as well as activate instructional strategies, assessments, and accommodations. Learning strategies are subject to change based on the students understanding throughout the lessons.
