COMPOSITE MATERIALS AND STRUCTURES

Time: 09:30 a.m. 12:30 p.m.

(Answer All the Questions) PART A - 2 Mark Qs (10x2=20) Explain difference between fibers and whiskers. Name any four aircraft using composites and parts in which used. Define Material utilization factor. Define Anisotropic material constants. Explain the function and desirable properties of resins used in FRP. Define micro mechanics. What are the characteristics of composite material? What the assumptions made in the strength of materials approach model? Are Other Elastic Constants Important. What is a Laminate? PART B - 16 Mark Qs (5x16=80) Determine E1 & E2 for lamina using macro - mechanics where 1 and 2 are arbitrary axis. (OR) Using machines of material approach obtain expressions for E1, E2, G12 , ?12 and show their relations with Vf. Derive the governing differential equation for an unidirectional Anisotropic plate and reduce if to orthotropic plates and isotropic plates. (OR) How is Strength Determined and explain types of lamina? Explain about Composite Laminates (OR) Discuss the production of glass fibers in detail using a neat sketch. Give the composition of E glass and S glass. Explain how (i) high modulus and (ii) high strength carbon fibers prepared. (OR) Briefly discuss the various fracture modes in fiber composites. Explain about the Stresses within a Cross ply Laminate? (OR) A composite laminate has 3 layers with fibre orientation 0? / 90? / 0?. Top layer an bottom layer thickness is 2mm (each and middle layer thickness is 3 mm. Given Nx = 50 N/m, Ny = 200 N/m Nxy = 300 N/m Mx = 1000N, My = 1000 N & Mxy = 500N compute the strain and curvature. E1 = 180 Gpa, E2 = 15 Gpa, 12 = 7 Gpa, ?12 = 0.28.
