ratios to compare unit prices? Vocabulary Ratio- the quantitative relation between two amounts showing the number of times one value contains or is contained within the other. Unit Price- the cost of an item per ounce, liter, pound etc. of what you want to buy. Objectives o Students will be able to find the unit rate of a given item. o Students will be able to find the unit price of a given item. o Students will make comparisons between two unit prices

Common Core Learning Standards Ratios & Proportional Relationships 6.RP Understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems. 1. Understand the concept of a ratio and use ratio language to describe a ratio relationship between two quantities. For example, The ratio of wings to beaks in the bird house at the zoo was 2:1, because for every 2 wings there was 1 beak. For every vote candidate A received, candidate C received nearly three votes. 2. Understand the concept of a unit rate a/b associated with a ratio a:b with b 0, and use rate language in the context of a ratio relationship. For example, This recipe has a ratio of 3 cups of flour to 4 cups of sugar, so there is 3/4 cup of flour for each cup of sugar. We paid $75 for 15 hamburgers, which is a rate of $5 per hamburger.1

3. Use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems, e.g., by reasoning about tables of equivalent ratios, tape diagrams, double number line diagrams, or equations. a. Make tables of equivalent ratios relating quantities with whole-number measurements, find missing values in the tables, and plot the pairs of values on the coordinate plane. Use tables to compare ratios. b. Solve unit rate problems including those involving unit pricing and constant speed. For example, if it took 7 hours to mow 4 lawns, then at that rate, how many lawns could be mowed in 35 hours? At what rate were lawns being mowed? c. Find a percent of a quantity as a rate per 100 (e.g., 30% of a quantity means 30/100 times the quantity); solve problems involving finding the whole, given a part and the percent. d. Use ratio reasoning to convert measurement units; manipulate and transform units appropriately when multiplying or dividing quantities. Pre-assessment Students have been working with ratios to determine the unit rate of a given item. Lesson Presentation Set-induction: On the Smartboard the students will read the definition for unit price. As a class, we will fill in the example prior to beginning the lesson. Procedure: A word problem will be displayed on the board. As a class we will underline important information in the problem and the question that the problem is asking. With the information the students will fill in the formula to find the unit price of the item. Once the unit price is found, the question will be answered in the form of a sentence. The second word problem will require the students to find 2 unit prices and compare them. As a class we will underline key information, fill in the empty spaces using the formula and write the answer in words. A third problem will then be displayed on the board without guidelines for the students to follow. Students will be required to underline, use appropriate formula and write a sentence to match their response. Will be discussed as a class. A worksheet will work independently on numbers 1-4 of their handout.

Closure: Students will complete the Exit Ticket on the board on a separate sheet of paper. They will be graded on a 3 point scale for showing all work, using the correct formula/labeling units and writing their answer in a sentence.

Materials Smart board Markers Pencils Notebook Homework Students will continue working on the handout distributed in class if they did not complete the assignment in class. If class work is completed, students will be given page___ in their packet to work on. Differentiation After the mini-lesson, several students will work in a small group with Mrs. Campo for further guidance at the back of the room. Students that have difficulty with division will be granted the use of a calculator. A step-by-step procedure will be displayed on the white board on how to divide with decimals for students that are struggling with this task. Evaluation/Assessment The exit ticket will allow the teacher to determine which students are struggling and which students have mastered the topic. Those students that have not been able to complete the task will have further instruction in small groups.
