Walters Teacher Candidate: Erika Walters Lesson # 3 st Subject/Grade: Physical Science/ 1 Grade Date and Time of Lesson: 11/21/13

@ 11:00 a.m. Learning Objective: The students will be able to identify the location of an object relative to another object by working in groups at their table to locate an object using descriptive words (In front of, Behind, Between, On top of, Under, Above, Below, and Beside). Alignment with Standards: Standard 1-5: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the positions and motions of objects. (Physical Science) Indicator 1-5.1: Identify the location of an object relative to another object. Additional Academic Standards: Indicator 1-1.1: Compare, classify, and sequence objects by number, shape, texture, size, color, and motion, using Standard English units of measurement where appropriate. Developmental Appropriateness or Cross-curricular connections: The learning objective is appropriate in terms of development because this lesson is setting the foundation for skills that will be developed later on in their schooling. Students will be learning appropriate terms to use when describing the location of objects. This will prepare students for identifying the position of objects using positional terms (such as above, below, inside of, underneath, or on top of) and a distance scale or measurement. Assessment(s) of the Objectives: Lesson Objective(s) The students will be able to identify the location of an object relative to another object by working in groups at their table to locate an object using descriptive words (In front of, Behind, Between, On top of, Under, Above, Below, and Beside). Assessment(s) of the Objective(s) Pre- Students will be asked to locate an object in the room or demonstrate a positional word, and the teacher will check if they understand the positional word or not (example, this object is above the Smart Board, etc.) During-When working in groups of 4, the teacher will ask a question about an object using a positional word. The first group to raise their hand will be the first to answer. If they get it wrong, then another group will answer. (In front of, Behind, Between, On top of, Under, Above, Below, and Beside). Post- At the end of the lesson, students will be asked to write one to two sentences containing one of the eight Use of Formative Assessment Assessing students on identifying the location of objects through the use of positional words will help prepare students for a concept that will develop in later grades.

Walters positional words that the teacher will write on the Smart Board, and then draw a picture that goes along with each sentence Accommodations: Confusion often results when positional words are associated with directional words such as up is the same as north. Up and north are not the same. Care should be taken to avoid any associations like this. Any groups that need help or extra assistance, the teacher will guide them through the activity. Materials: Note cards with clues containing a positional word Smart Board Blank paper with lines at bottom for writing sentences or handwriting paper Procedures: 1. Before beginning activity, the teacher will review the positional words (In front of, Behind, Between, On top of, Under, Above, Below, and Beside) with the class. a. Used to describe the position of an object; can help when describing the location of an object if you wanted someone else to be able to find it 2. Have volunteers come up and exemplify each positional word (if possible) a. If not use an object in the classroom 3. Explain game and rules to whole class a. Helper of the day will pick who will be the leader in each group (these are the ones who will raise their hand, after group discusses what their answer will be) b. Teacher will read a clue card c. Tell each group to talk quietly about it with group (give them about 5 or 10 seconds) and then leader will raise 4. Continue this for 3 rounds and then ask bonus question a. The group that reaches 7 points by the end of each round will receive a prize (stamp their ten frame) 5. Once all 3 rounds have been finished ask students: a. If there were certain position words more difficult or were some easier. 6. Allow students to use handwriting paper or blank paper with lines at the bottom to complete post assessment. a. Write all eight positional words on Smart Board. b. Students can choose 1-2 positional words from the given list. c. Students will write 1-2 sentences using those positional words and then draw a picture that go along with the sentence. 7. Collect students work and close out a. How do positional words help you locate an object? b. Answers will vary (they make it easier, etc..) 8. Return class to cooperating teacher

Activity Analysis: During the first activity, volunteers will come to front of room and show class how what each positional word means or looks like (In front of, Behind, Between, On top of, Under, Above, Below, and Beside). They will also participate in a class game where they will listen to clues that use positional words to locate an object in the classroom. It is important that each student understands and is able to correctly use positional words because they will be building upon this concept in future grades. During the second activity, students will be asked to write one to two sentences containing one of the eight positional words that the teacher will write on the Smart Board, and draw a picture that go along with each sentence. This activity is to conclude what has been done during the lesson. To make sure students understand using

Walters positional words to locate objects, they will have to create their own sentences to describe an object in the classrooms location; drawing a picture along with their sentences will be for their benefit. The Smart Board will be used to write the eight positional words, since there is no room on the white board. Also, using the Smart Board to write the words will help students to correctly spell the positional words when writing their sentences.
