Focus will depend on the particular needs of students Moving through writing process o Planning o Drafting o Conferring o Refining o Publishing Teaching specific writing strategies *Best to focus on one detail to develop deep knowledge then move onto others Guided Writing (20 minutes) o Involves working with small groups in order to identify a common need ! Needs found through analyzing student writing on a daily basis o Groups are fluid ! Rarely same from day to day o Focus on: ! Punctuation ! Writing a complete sentence ! Creating paragraphs ! Hearing and recording the sounds in words ! Print conversations OR Interactive Writing o Involves working with small groups either based on needs or mixed ability o Groups are fluid and based on specific focus o Focus on: ! Recounting a big book ! A previously taught lesson on how to write ! Writing a response to a shared book Independent Writing (20 minutes) o Students have opportunity to compose their own texts and demonstrate their control of what has been modeled for them o Children write for real purposes and audiences Sharing (10-15 minutes) o Teacher facilitates the process o Students have opportunity to share what they have done or are working on o Share strategies and processes that they have used o Receive constructive feedback in order to improve future writing ! Teacher should spend time teaching children how to be critical friends to their peers to ensure that this is productive o This information is used for future planning that target specific needs
