Unit

This semester, students got to put on their invention caps and create their very own mechanical creature! But that isnt allthey had to deconstruct old junk first! Just like local artist Bill Swet, we took apart broken things and made cool creatures out of them. Broken bike gears and chains become the bones of a dragon, or the motherboard of an old computer becomes a funky hedgehog the world is at their fingertips, and they get to use found art and assemblage to make it all come together.

STEAMPUNK CREATURES
Students learned about value

Tom and Alicias 4th and 5th grade class

Lesson 1- Cyborgized: Students looked through magazines and found multiple biological and mechanical images that they can combine to create a new creature using the method called collage. Lesson 2 - Mind your Gauges: Students built a creature out of the deconstructed mechanical objects. Using tools and their imaginations they disassembled these items and re-assembled a new creature. Lesson 3 - Volted and Bolted: Students used their creature from Lesson 2 as their reference for creating a blueprint for that creature showing different perspectives.
