Common Core/Essential Standards: Social Studies 5.H.1.2 Summarize the political, economic and social aspects of colonial life in the thirteen Colonies. Language Arts RI. 7 Draw on information from multiple print or digital sources, demonstrating the ability to locate an answer to a question quickly or to solve a problem efficiently. RI.4 Determine the meaning of general academic and domain-specific words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 5 topic or subject area. Lesson Objective: The students will access the website Social Studies for Kids through a Google site webquest designed by the teacher and complete a graphic organizer outlining multiple aspects of life in colonial America. The students will work in small groups to complete the organizer with 90% accuracy. Assessment strategy: Student learning will be assessed through informal observation during the webquest research phase, the completion of the graphic organizer, and at the end of the unit, the students will take a comprehensive test about life in Colonial America. General Description of Procedures: Monday Introduce Colonial America unit information from Harcourt text pp. 60 64. Early Explorers o Portugal first country to have a navigational school o Prince Henry early 1400s o Developed maps / used compass, chronomter & astrolabe o Searched for a route to Asia Christopher Columbus o Sent by Spain to cross the Atlantic to find a trade route to Asia o Thought it was shorter than going around Africa o Discovered two continents! o When did he sail? Conquistadors (I say You say) early 1500s o Southeast United States Juan Ponce de Leon Hernando de Soto o Hernando Cortes Mexico Defeated Aztecs Built Mexico City Base for Spains conquest of southern portion of N.A. This one is very simple all the information we needed to find was at one site, and Ive just made direct links to the specific pages the students will need in order to find the answers. Graphic Organizer small group Laptop lab day 2 Log in to Webquest Graphic Organizer small group Students will begin working with their group to advertise one of the colonies. Using the information gleaned from the WebQuest, the students will try to entice new settlers to their chosen colony. They will plan what they want to say, draw a mock-up of their ad, and ensure that important facts about the colony are included before beginning work on the poster sized paper. Students will be informally assessed for a participation grade on how well they work together as a unit as well as on the content of their advertisement. The students will finalize their advertisements and present them to the class.
