Common Core/Essential Standards: RL.5.5 5. Explain how a series of chapters, scenes, or stanzas fits together to provide the overall structure of a particular story, drama, or poem. (Common Core I Can understand the structures of stories, plays, and poems.) Lesson Objective: Students will gain an understanding of the literary elements used in novels including: plot, characterization, setting, and genre. Assessment strategy: A variety of assessments will be used with this novel study. Students will write summaries of the plot points for each chapter in their learning logs, make predictions regarding the text, connect the text to previously read stories of the same genre, and take a final assessment in the form of an Accelerated Reader test. Additionally this week, we will start the D.A.R.E. paper with all students. Each day will include a 20-30 minute Writers Workshop as the students draft their essays.
