Murtha Lesson Plan October 2nd 2013 Habitats Grade 1 Purpose: This lesson is being taught so that students will be able to identify animals and plants that are in the forest habitat

Vocabulary: 1. Habitat- where an animal lives. In its habitat, an animal needs to find enough food, water and shelter to survive. 2. Forest- Land that is covered with trees.

Objectives: I. Students will be able to define and describe a forest habitat. II. Students will be able to label the correct habitat for certain animals. II. Students will be abele to identify the correct plants and waterways within a forest.

Standards: Science Standard 4The Living Environment Students will understand and apply scientific concepts, principles, and theories pertaining to the physical setting and living environment and recognize the historical development of ideas in science

Reading Information Text Standard 3: Describe the connection between two individuals, events, ideas, or pieces of information in a text. Standard 4: Explain how specific images (e.g., a diagram showing how a Machine works) contribute to and clarify a text.

Reading Standards: Foundational Skills Standard 3. Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words. a. Distinguish long and short vowels when reading regularly spelled one-syllable words. b. Know spelling-sound correspondences for additional common vowel teams. c. Decode regularly spelled two-syllable words with long vowels. d. Decode words with common prefixes and suffixes. e. Identify words with inconsistent but common spelling-sound correspondences. f. Recognize and read grade-appropriate irregularly spelled words.

Speaking and Listening Standard 1: Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 1 topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.

Language Standard 1. Demonstrate command of the conventions of Standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. Standard 2. Ask and answer question about what a speaker says in order to gather additional information or clarify something that is not understood. Standard 3. Add drawings or other visual displays to descriptions when appropriate to clarify ideas, thoughts, and feelings. Standard 4. Demonstrate command of the conventions of Standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.

Pre-Assessment: Students have already learned about the four habitats, which are forest, ocean, desert and wetland. They know the definition of a habitat and the description of each of these habitats. They will need to review all four habitats, but then go into detail on the forest habitat.

Lesson Plan Presentation: Set Induction: The teacher will ask the students what they remember learning the past few days about what a habitat is, and if they remember the four different habitats we have learned.

Procedure: 1. Begin a class discussion with the class at the rug. Asking questions such as, a. *Name* can you tell me what a habitat is? b. What were the four habitats we have discussed?

2. The teacher will then give the students a quick preview of what our lesson will entail and ask the students to come to the rug.

3. Once the class has reviewed what they know we will begin the smart board portion of the lesson. They will review the four different habitats and what they look like. Students will come up to move pictures of the habitats to the correct location.

4. The class well then sees a picture of a forest with different animals within the habitat. They will need to decide which animals belong and which dont. A student will be able to come up and click on the animals that they do not think belong. 5. The class will then see two spirals labeled ocean and forest. There will be several different pictures of animals. The teacher will call on behaving students to come up to drag the correct animals into the swirl habitat.

6. The class will then review what a forest habitat is and what animals and plants can be found there.

7. The teacher will break the class up into 5 differentiated groups. a. ESL students will label different animals and place them into their habitat. b. Group 1 (Low)- Students will be given several different pictures of animals,

plants and they will need to sort through the choices of to see which belong within the forest habitat. c. Group 2 (High)- Students will be completing a booklet where they will need to fill out facts about the forest and then draw their favorite animals from the forest and write its name. d. Group 3(Medium) Create a forest habitat poster with different plants and animals. They will be given a few incorrect animals; they will need to know to not include them on their poster. e. Group 4 (Medium) They will also create a forest habitat poster with different plants and animals. They will be given a few incorrect animals; they will need to know to not include them on their poster.

8. At the end the class will come together to discuss what they have learned, and share what they have completed if time is available or at the end of the day.

Materials and Resources: Paper and Pencil/ Pen- to take notes with and write down definitions of class lecture. Smartboard- to present the first portion of the interactive lesson. Sorting words and pictures: for ESL students Posters- For the students to create ahabitat Habitat Booklet- For high-leveled students to complete Animal pictures and labels- For ESL students to identify

Follow-Up Activity or Assignment: The students will need to finish the assignment they were doing during class.

Evaluation/Assessment: The teacher will be walking around the classroom helping and assessing the students throughout the lesson. The class will have a ticket out the door to check for understanding as well.

Accommodations a. ESL students will label different animals and place them into their habitat. b. Group 1 (Low)- Students will be given several different pictures of animals, plants and they will need to sort through to choice which belong within the forest habitat. c. Group 2 (High)- Students will be completely a booklet where they will need to fill out facts about the forest and then draw their favorite animals from the forest and write its name. d. Interpersonal Learners- Are involved in working as a class in class discussion and on their group assignment
