On behalf of the Iowa

Department of Education,
Im pleased to invite you to
the 2012 Statewide Special
Education Conference.
States have been addressing
disparities in education since as
early as 1964, and have been
receiving support for students
with disabilities since 1975. Getting students with
disabilities into school is thus no longer an issue. The
new challenge is making sure they leave school ready
for college or a career. Students with disabilities might
need specialized instruction, but the content theyre
taught and the achievement levels theyre expected
to reach are the same as what we expect for students
without disabilities.
We know that the percentage of students with
disabilities leaving school college- and career-ready is
not 100 percent. Its not even close. So if we are truly
going to deliver on the promises of educational equity
made a generation ago, we need to do something
more, and we need to do it together.
Every child in the Iowa public school system deserves
to make a years growth in a years time, and to
have a team of caring individuals working together
to prepare that child for life after high school. This
conference represents a collective step forward, and
a commitment to high standards, evidence-based
practices, and improved life outcomes for students
with disabilities.
Whether youre a teacher, parent, compliance
administrator, policymaker, attorney or advocate for
persons with disabilities, we hope to see you at our
frst annual Statewide Special Education Conference!
