Topic: Mathematics Addition and Subtraction in word problems UbD Lesson Plan Template Stage 1: Desired Results Established Goals: 1.OA.A.1: Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing with unknowns in all positions, e.g. by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem. Understandings: Students will understand Addition is the adding of two numbers. Addend (x) + addend (y) is equal = sum (z) An addend is a number that is being added. A sum is the two addends added together. In addition if an addend is missing, subtract the known addend from the sum. In addition, you can swap the positions of the numbers you are adding. Subtraction is the difference of two numbers. Minuend (x) subtrahend (y) = difference (z) In subtraction, the minuend is the number being subtracted from. The subtrahend is the number that is too be subtracted. The difference is the result of subtracting one number from the other. Adding to: adding one number to another Taking from: taking a number away from another Putting together: adding two numbers Taking apart: taking away from one number Comparing: are both sides of the equal sign equivalent? Essential Question(s): Why can you change the positions of the numbers being added? Why cant you change the positions of the numbers being subtracted? What is the difference between addition and subtraction?

Students will know. Addition = # + # = _ Subtraction = # - # = _ Addend a number being added (Addend) + (Addend) = (Sum) A sum = two addends added together Subtraction is the difference of two numbers. The minuend is the number being subtracted from. The subtrahend is the number that is too be subtracted. The difference is the result of subtracting one number from the other. (Minuend) (subtrahend) = (difference) Adding to: adding one number to another Taking from: taking a number away from another Putting together: adding two numbers Taking apart: taking away from one number Comparing: are both sides of the equal sign equivalent? Stage 2: Assessment Evidence Performance Tasks: The teacher will make sure the students understand, addition is the adding of two addends to get a sum and subtraction is taking away a subtrahend from the minuend leaving the difference. The teacher will then split up groups, leaving a struggling student with those who have excelled in addition and subtraction for collaboration. The teacher will then hand out 20 gummy bears to each student. The teacher will have a smart board lesson that shows different addition and subtraction problems. The students will work out the problem with their gummy bears then one student will be called up to show their work on the board. After a few addition and subtraction problems, there will be unknowns in each position. The teacher will explain if an addend is missing but the sum

Students will be able to Solve word problems with unknowns in all positions. Write an equation given a word problem. Draw a picture representing the word problem. Formulate their own word problems. Understand the wording that goes along with each type of question. Identify addition/subtraction problems.

Other Evidence: Students will use their manipulative to work out the problems given at their desk. This will allow hands on approach to learning. The students will walk the students through the addition and subtraction problems leading them into word problems.

is given for the students to either subtract the addend from the sum or count up from the given addend to the sum. (Using the gummy bears) The teacher will then explain in subtraction if the minuend or subtrahend is missing but the difference is given, what to do. The teacher will tell the students if the minuend is missing but the difference is give, they need to add the subtrahend to the difference and that is the minuend. The teacher will tell the students if the subtrahend is missing they need to subtract the minuend from the difference to get the subtrahend. The teacher will show a few of these problems on the smart board. The teacher will then hand out 20 marshmallows. The teacher will say to the students for example, they put 5 marshmallows on their desk to an already existing pile of marshmallows. All together there are 10. How many marshmallows were already there? The teacher will talk the students through a few of these problems. After talking through the problems, the teacher will give the students word problems on the smart board. For example, if all together Jen had 15 marshmallows but John gave her 7 of them, how many did she start with? For ELL students the teacher will hand out worksheets that have all the problems written out on the paper. For example (7+7) showing 7 objects + 7 objects so they can follow along and visualize it at their desk as well as on the smart board. This will allow them to match up their manipulative with the objects and add them together. The students will then play a game where students have the chance to make up their own word problem and they will ask the class. The students will work out their answers at the desk. The students will then be assigned the worksheets to asses their learning of these skills based on their work throughout the lesson.

Stage 3: Learning Plan Learning Activities: The teacher will have a smart board lesson that shows different addition and subtraction problems. The students will work out the problem with their gummy bears then one student will be called up to show their work on the board. The smart board will have gummy bear icons on it so they can use them just like they did at their desk. After a few addition and subtraction problems, there will be unknowns in each position. The teacher will explain if an addend is missing but the sum is given for the students to either subtract the addend from the sum or count up from the given addend to the sum. The teacher will show a few of these problems on the smart board and the students will use their manipulatives at their desks. The teacher will then hand out 20 marshmallows. The teacher will say to the students for example, they put 5 marshmallows on their desk to an already existing pile of marshmallows. All together there are 10. How many marshmallows were already there? The teacher will talk the students through a few of these problems. (subtract 5 from 10 and that is the missing value) After talking through the problems, the teacher will give the

students word problems on the smart board. For example, if all together Jen had 15 marshmallows but John gave her 7 of them, how many did she start with? The teacher will demonstrate each type of example then guide the students and then the students will do it independently.
