Date 11/7/13 1. Creators Name: Marjane Satrapi 2. Creations Title: The Veil 3. What do you think is the main point or message of this work? (Think a little more deeply than normal about this; remember, rarely are things only or even primarily literal). The veil is seen and viewed in many different ways. It is seen as a way of protecting the women from danger and harm. It also is a way for men to have power and control over the woman. In this comic strip it tells the story of her life and how the veil was now a part of it. The reasons why I think this comic strip was made, is to show how it affected women and their everyday life, including men. This piece of art and creation is meant to show to people that may not fully understand the reasoning of the veil. It is to tell the history and the story of how the veil came to be and the major impact it has had on peoples lives, even today. It has also become a norm in certain societies and cultures.

4. Why do you think so? I think this way because of how the way the story is told and all the emotions the girls and women felt about the veil. The hardships it brought to them and how they could no longer have a choice. The huge effect and impact the veil

had over their lives and how they had to change their way of living to adapt to a whole new lifestyle. 5. How do you react to this material? I personally think its disrespectful towards women. I do not like the idea that to be accepted into the culture and lifestyle, that you have to hide your face. It takes away from self and who you are. You are told what he or she expects of you and you have no voice or real choice in the matter. I feel like it is a way of labeling women as object, not as human beings. 6. Why do you think you react this way? I am raised in a different culture and religion. I have different views and beliefs of different things. My up bringing tells me its wrong and a way of controlling women. Taking away their rights and freedom.

7. What else do you think you need to know more about to understand this work? For me to fully have a understanding I would need to do some research and ask questions. I think I t would be helpful to talk to someone of this culture and hear more about the history of it and how it effects your personal life. I would want to hear different peoples opinions on the veil and headscarves from both men and woman. Maybe even try one on and see how it personally makes me feel, as a person in todays society. Also look more in depth about the reasons why woman should wear them.
