Electronic Engineering Technology

Purdue University has a wide variety of majors from engineering to interior design, but in my case I chose electronic engineering technology as my academic field. Contrary to the average persons belief, the major isnt as difficult as it sounds. I just like learning how things are wired. After extensive research I found a research paper titled Advances in Power Electronics Its impact on the Environment written by Bimal K. Bose. The best way to analyze this paper is to use John Swales Create A Reseach Space (CARS) model. The CARS model is split into three main parts: Establish a territory, fill a niche, and occupy the niche. Establishing territory is like providing background for the whole article. It includes some steps like claiming centrality, making topic generalizations, and reviewing previous items of research. Establishing a niche exhibits that there is a need to fill an empty space of research. Counter-claiming, question raising, or continuing a tradition can do this. To occupy the niche the author turns the space into a research space by demonstrating how to fill it. The CARS model is clearly applicable in the paper entitled Advances in Power Electronics Its impact on the Environment . The author Bimal K. Bose is establishing a territory by providing a background to the article in his Introduction. He states, the last decade of the 20th Century can be truly defined as the era of Power Electronics(Bose). The author is successful in establishing a niche as well. The tactic used is that he asserts something contrary to expectations. We think the

With multiple research examples, we can expect the reader to come to a conclusion by the time they get to the end. This is how Bore occupied the niche. He obviously states his viewpoint in the end by stating, Power electronics and variable frequency drives will undoubtedly play a key roll in global industrial automation in the 21st century(Bose). Bimal K. Bose followed the CARS model step by step, and it was as easy as 1, 2, 3. Bose uses a variety of research methods in his paper. One is that he doesnt use direct quotes in his paper. He provides references at the end, and data charts after that. By gaining his information from charts he doesnt need others opinions or statements. His research is based off data charts. Another method he uses is gathering his own data. Many of his sources at the end of the research paper are citations of his own work. This stands out from most papers because the author is gathering his or her own research and conveying it, when most writers use data from outside references. Contrary to popular belief, research papers display some elements of persuasion. The paper Advances in Power Electronics Its impact on the Environment even has rhetoric in its title. Before the reader has read the first word they are already being persuaded that the environment is being impacted on Power Electronics. The structure is quite basic compared to other papers I have read. It has

Riley Van Eerd Van Eerd 3 Professor Lipnicky Engl106 Academic Discourse a classical strategy. The paper starts out in an interesting way by saying that Power Electronics are one of the fastest changing evolutionary technologies in Electrical Engineering. Next, Bimal leads into background on the topic that is relevant to the specific audience. For example, The last decade of the 20th Century can truly be defined as the era of power electronics (Bose). After the background, he states his claims and evidence clearly and emphatically. For instance, Environmental problems are recently becoming dominating issues in our society. The nuclear energy has safety problems, and the nuclear plant waste remains radioactive for thousands of years. Burning of fossil fuels gives polluting gases, such as CO2, SO, NOx, HC and CO(Bose). After the problem he goes on with supported data to explain the solution. I believe his audience is someone with electrical engineering experience. He uses vocabulary and data that the average reader would not be able to comprehend like the terms ICEV and PWM. But he has a tone that is easily convincing through statistics like when he states, The USA is ever hungry for oil. The 42% of US energy comes from oil most of which is consumed in automobile transportation(Bose). Boses thesis is clearly stated toward the end when he says, Power electronics and variable frequency drives will undoubtedly play a key roll in global industrial automation in the 21st century(Bose). After supported data he concludes the use of power electronics and VFDs are the future.
