Assignment Overview
A literacy narrative is an essay genre that explores our experiences with reading, writing, and/or language. The personal story (narrative) shared in a literacy narrative can explain feelings towards reading or writing, or as Amy Tans Mother Tongue demonstrates, a literacy narrative can explore how even when we all speak the same language, we speak it differently with different people in our lives. Like Tan does, for this assignment, you will explore different types of English you speak depending on your different roles. For example, pretend you are the parent of a four -year-old whose first pet has just died. You probably explain to him/her, Max has gone to heaven and avoid words like dead. When telling a fourteen-year-old, though, you can probably say, He died. This happens more often than we realizeyou can walk up to your closest friends and say, You wont believe what he did this time, and they will immediately know who he is (whereas a stranger would say, Who?). For your essay, select two to three versions of English you speakthese will be your thesis statement, and you will spend a body paragraph on each version listed in your thesis. You will sup port your claim with specific examples from your life see details below for what strategies you should employ in your essay.
