Lesson Plan Title: Fun with Fractions! Topic To Teach: Fractions Standards Addressed:
CCSS.Math.Content.4.NF.B.3 Understand a fraction a/b with a > 1 as a sum of fractions 1/b. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.4.4 Report on a topic or text, tell a story, or recount an experience in an organized manner, using appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details to support main ideas or themes; speak clearly at an understandable pace. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.4.5 Add audio recordings and visual displays to presentations when appropriate to enhance the development of main ideas or themes.

Standard 8.1 A.6 Computer and Information Literacy: Create and present a presentation
using appropriate software.

General Goal(s):
Students will be observers in the world around them and understand how math can be carried over in daily routines. Students will use a digital application to explain how fractions are used all around them

Specific Objectives:
SWBAT develop a word problem involving fractions. SWBAT match a representation of a number to a situation. SWBAT use digital media to explain appropriate how a word problem was solved by providing appropriate supporting details in an organized manner. SWBAT Understand addition and subtraction of fractions as joining and separating parts referring to the same whole. SWBAT Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole and having like denominators, e.g., by using visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem.

Required Materials:
Laptop, I pad, Desktop Story Board Worksheet http://www.storyboardthat.com/ I movie http://www.apple.com/mac/imovie/ Movie Maker http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-live/movie-maker#t1=overview *Manipulatives work sheet if a party or gathering was not observed within week 1 use the manipulative to come up with word problems

Anticipatory Set:
What are some ways that we see fractions in everyday life?

Step-By-Step Procedures: 2 week process

Overview: Whole group introduction to fractions Develop simple fraction problems Watch fun educational videos about fractions Small group iPad games involving fractions Week 1: Students will be out in their community observing everything around them-Math is all around us. Students while out at a party, gathering, or home will be on the look out for pizza and/or cake. Once the pizza and/or cake is spotted students will take note of how many slices the pizza and/or cake is cut into? Students will take pictures or videos to show the pizza and/or cake in its original whole form. Students will observe out of the total number of slices how many people want a slice of pizza and/or cake? Students will take pictures or videos to show how the pizza is becoming less and less as each time a person takes a slice. Once the students have completed the observations they will begin to work on their storyboard using http://www.storyboardthat.com/ Students storyboards should be 6 slides, themed, creative and demonstrate the word problems. *Reminder you can use one story board to demonstrate your 2 word problems or you can create 2 separate story boards per each problem. By the end of week 1 all story boards should be completed and shared for any feedback. Week 2: Students will be looking at using iMovie http://www.apple.com/mac/imovie/ or Movie Maker http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-live/movie-maker#t1=overview to publish a short video of their findings and what they have learned. Be creative, Be clear, Have Fun and Enjoy learning about Fractions! Students will share their storyboards and short videos to the class. *If you are interested in Extra Credit you can come up with your OWN fraction song, record it or a make a video of it and add it to your short video.

Plan For Independent Practice:

Students will play Math Fraction games on the iPads: Fraction Basics https://itunes.apple.com/US/app/id404527208?mt=8 Pizza Fractions 1 https://itunes.apple.com/US/app/id374084320?mt=8 Students will watch videos about Fractions: Equivalent Fractions and Math Rocks! The fraction Song Mrsbaril4th. (2012). Equivalent fractions 4th grade [Theater]. Available from http:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFDP_bbfW7s Twoplusonemathrocks. (2010). Math rocks! The fraction song [Theater]. Available from http:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7QsgSpaoH8

Closure:
Overall the students should gain knowledge about how Math is all around and how fractions can be seen everyone. Students will be combining their love of technology with math. The students will share their work using the Smart Board in the classroom to present to their classmates and receive feedback. Was their fraction correct? Did their story board and short video have a theme that corresponding with the word problems? Do you understand fractions more after completing the assignments?

Assessment Based On Objectives:

Students will be assessed on their knowledge and understanding of fractions, clear narration on their short videos, the complexity of their story board, the development of at least 2 word problems and creativity.

Adaptations (For Students with Learning Disabilities):

Students will work one to one with a Teacher or with another student on the story board and short video. Students will have added response time. Steps will be broken down into smaller chunks. Cue words and gestures will be used for prompting. Students can use true to life manipulatives to help visualize. Students will use a multi sensory approach to reinforce the requirements (Auditory, Visual, tactile and kinetics). Teacher will provide a real life scenario if one is not observed.

Extensions (For Gifted Students):

Students will be handed more challenges Change of the Denominator Cutting the pizza and cake into more slices and developing different word problems
