Lauren Mason English 1101H-101 1 November 2013 Revised Essay Formal Outline THESIS: I agree with almost everything Dr. Benton says is wrong with the undergraduate educational system for many reasons, though there is a minority that will have the opposing side. I. Variations make it difficult to even begin the discussion of

how to solve the perfect storm of undergraduate education. A. Professors are severely restricted in the way of students and their own professor duties. B. Student preparation is almost non-existent though they will say and believe in the opposite. C. Surely, someone with a degree could have at least thought of some plausible solutions to these issues. II. Professors are very limited and that means there is not as much to work with as there should be. A. Professors have to basically teach students from an early high school, possibly even middle school, level before they can dive into their own subject matter.

Durham 2 B. It is not just the students that have risks if they fail, but also the professors are putting their job and career on the line. C. The United States is on the low end of things compared to foreign establishments. III. The differences between lower level educations and college is a large void. A. Teachers and professors do not function the same in their

scholarly routines and objectives. B. Students are mostly adrift almost everywhere, floating in

the wreckage of a perfect storm that has transformed our higher education almost beyond recognition.(Benton) C. Lower level education and post-secondary education differ

greatly. IV. I have heard not even such as a word about a plausible theoretical solution. A. Everyone that goes through post-secondary education knows

there are issues with the system, like every other system there is, but why has someone not come up with at least one possible plan? B. There are some things that are heading in the opposite

direction they should be, such as standardized testing. V. There is a negative light to A Perfect Storm in Undergraduate Education.

Durham 3 A. The original article is implying that college degrees are

starting to just basically being passed out easily, meaning that students are not really learning anything, so college degrees are worthless (StarlaJane). B. College degrees are worth something if done properly,

because its worked before. VI. I go to college not for the subject matter I want but the degree that will eventually get me a better-paying career. A. Personal interests tend to take a backseat on the priority

listing when compared with which makes the more money to support you. B. There is a large amount of people who see college as a

career-getter or a complete waste of time. C. According to Dr. Benton, most people are buying an

experience not a hard-won degree.
