Competency F Reflective Planning and Instruction Pre assessment In order to pre assess my first grade students on addition and

subtraction; I created different sets of fact family cards to five. Prior to any instruction I let the students use manipulatives to match the addition and subtraction facts. I observed each students ability in order to plan instruction. Only two of my students matched up the addition and subtraction facts. The rest of my students were novice at the skill.

I began my instruction by focusing solely on addition. I modeled for my students how to set up a math equation with addends and a sum by using manipulatives. I then created different addition facts to five and had my students represent the facts with their own math cubes. I let the students explore different strategies for addition. As I introduced different strategies, we added them to our anchor chart. Our strategies for addition included, (use manipulatives, draw a picture, use tally marks, mental math, count out loud, use a number line, count on). After one week of instruction, my students completed an addition to five test. Below is an artifact of one of my novice students.
