I have found journaling to be a very enjoyable and effective task for my first graders. Journaling also gives me a wonderful opportunity to integrate different curricular disciplines. I give my students a journal to complete every day. After my students complete their journals, I have them draw a picture as well. Then I choose a few students to share their journals with the class. Journaling integrates many elements of language arts such as reading, writing, thinking, and speaking. In order to integrate disciplines, I choose topics that are relative to content that we are covering in different subject areas. For example, I had my students complete the following journal. Force is a ______ and _______. I use force when I............. The students had to apply knowledge from our Force, Motion, and Energy unit in order to complete the journal. The students extended their thinking by coming up with an example of when they use force. Below is an artifact from one of my students.

(Force is a push or pull. I cause force when I push somebody on the swings.)
