"#$%$&'(%#)&*& &+,,-%*.) "/$0)1%

"/$23),4 How does doubling the amount of carbon dioxide from .5g
of bisodium carbonate dissolved in 100mL of water to 1g. dissolved in
100mL of water affect the rate of photosynthesis in elodea?

HYPOTHESIS: If doubling the amount of carbon dioxide in 100mL of
water by adding baking soda, then the amount of oxygen produced
will increase by 30%.

THEORY:

Photosynthesis is the process that takes place in the leaves of
a plant. It absorbs energy from the sunlight producing oxygen and
glucose from carbon dioxide, water and light. The chlorophyll uses
the light to power photosynthesis and the chloroplast is responsible
for producing food. I think that there will be more oxygen produced
when doubling the amount of baking soda from 0.5g to 1g. I think this
because from looking at the 2012 data, almost all of the classes had
an increase. The average of the classes had a 31.04% increase and
using this data I rounded it to a 30% increase for my hypothesis.

C0NCL0SI0N:

In this lab, my gioup testeu if caibon uioxiue bubbles incieases
fiom the elouea when uoubling the amount of baking soua fiom u.Sg to
1g in 1uumL of watei. I hypothesizeu that the amount of oxygen bubbles
will inciease by Su%. Ny hypothesis was coiiect foi Su% of the time. In
peiious 1,6,7 theie was an inciease of 22.S%, 27.S% anu 94.8% like
what I pieuicteu. Bowevei, the othei peiious 2,S anu 4 hau a S1.9%,
21.4% anu S9.7% ueciease, which uoes not apply to my hypothesis. Ny
gioup compaieu to the 7
th
giaue uata was veiy close, my gioup hau a
22.S% inciease anu 7
th
giaue hau a 21.S% inciease. In conclusion, my
hypothesis was coiiect that the iate of photosynthesis woulu inciease
when moie bisouium caibonate is uissolveu in 1uu mL of watei.

ANALYSIS:

While iecoiuing the uata, I noticeu that theie aie some
uisciepancies in the 2u1S uata. The uata hau a veiy wiue iange anu S
out of the 6 classes hau highei numbeis with less caibon uioxiue. Peiiou

7 hau a majoi inciease fiom S.8 to 72.8 making an inciease of 94.8%.
That iesulteu peiiou 7 to be an outliei. Peiiou 1 changeu the aveiage
uiamatically because it hau a much highei amount of oxygen bubbles
piouuceu. Peiiou 1 hau completely opposite fiom peiiou S because it
hau 22.S% inciease while peiiou S hau a 21.4% ueciease.
Theie aie many ieasons why theie weie inconsistencies in the
uata. Eveiyone counts uiffeiently, some people coulu've counteu
bubbles that came fiom the stem oi misseu bubbles that came up.
Lamps weie tuineu on at uiffeient times uuiing the tiials anu that
coulu've causeu the elouea to piouuce moie oi less bubbles. The baking
soua was at uiffeient places in the test tube so that coulu've iesulteu
some leaves not to get any baking soua. To impiove the ieliability of the
pioceuuie, we can be veiy specific about wheie to count the bubbles.
The peison shoulu be counting fiom the leaves, not the stem. The mass
of the elouea coulu be uiffeient, piouucing oxygen bubbles at a uiffeient
iate so we shoulu be veiy cleai about how big anu heavy the elouea
shoulu be. As foi the baking soua, we shoulu mix it befoie tuining the
light on so that the baking soua isn't all focuseu at the bottom of the test
tube.
