Alignment with Standards: LA.3.RL.3.3 Describe characters in a story (e.g., their traits, motivations, or feelings) and explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of events. EEDA - Section 59-29-135: Character education SSCA Description of student behavior.

Developmental Appropriateness:
The learning objective is developmental appropriate because students are able to speak openly about the different types of character traits. It is developmental appropriate because the students are being introduce to character traits and they will be able to draw the character trait picture. The learning objective is developmental appropriate for the students emotional needs by the students being able to receive constructive criticism.

Assessment(s) of the Objectives:

Lesson Objective(s) Assessment(s) of the Objective(s) The assessment will be oral and based on teacher observation of the number of students who raises their hands when asked a question. Use of Formative Assessment I will use this assessment to determine if I need to review the character trait lesson with the students before beginning the chapter book.

The students will be able to describe what a character trait is and how to recognize the character trait of a character in a story when reading with 90% accuracy. Accommodations:

The students that are slower learners will be placed on the carpet in front of the Smartboard because they need to continue to be focus. Small groups will be pulled if needed based on observations of the students during the lesson.

Materials: Powerpoint presentation, chart paper, and markers.

Fall 2013

Procedures: 1. Open lesson. (What do you think character trait means?) Call on a few students. Then show first slide. Read through the bullets on the slide. Explain what a character trait is and give an example (responsible, helpful, and caring). Explain what a physical trait is and give an example (tall, short, weight, eye color, and skin color). (What is the difference between character trait and physical trait?) 2. (How do character traits help you become a better reader?) Call on a couple of students. Turn to the next slide. Read through the bullets on the slide. Give an example story for the slide. Use the character trait, responsible, as an example. 3. Turn to the next slide. Read through the bullets on the slide. Discuss the lab incident as an example. (Ms. Smith had to yell because there was too much talking. Di you automatically think I was a mean person? No! Ms. Smith is actually what type of person?) Explain slide. 4. Turn to the next slide. Read through the bullets on the slide. Turn to the next slide and use the character trait, generous as an example. Discuss the slide. 5. Turn to the next slide. Read each of the 6 ways to identify character traits in a story. Get out chart paper and markers. Draw a stick person figure. Write the word thinks by the stick person figure to represent what the character thinks. Write the word says in a bubble near the mouth to represent what the character says. Draw a basketball and write the word does beside it to represent what the character does. Draw a mirror on the left side of the character and write the words looks like to represent how the character looks. Draw a heart in the midd le of the character to represent how the character feels. (Students will draw the stick figure in the next lesson on character traits. 6. Turn to the next slide. Read the bullet. Explain the bullet of this slide using the example story (The Hare and the Tortoise) in the next slide. Explain the character trait (confident and arrogant) use in the slide to describe the hare, and then explain the example and connection of the character trait. 7. Closing. Turn to the next slide. Review the lesson by using the questions. (What are character traits?) (How are character traits and physical traits different?) (How do you think character traits will help you become a better reader?) (What were the six ways to identify character traits in a story?) Activity Analysis: The two activities I plan to use are the Powerpoint presentation and a visual character drawing on character traits. I plan to use this presentation and visual character drawing because it will give the students a better understanding of character trait and how to use it when reading. These activities support the lesson objective because it describes what a character trait is and how to understand character trait as a reader. The students need visual representation so the presentation and seeing a drawing will help them. The students also like to take notes and draw so the visual drawing of a character will help them understand character trait also. They will always be able to refer back to the drawing whenever we are discussing character traits.
