Learning Objective: Students will have the ability to identify community helpers, and their roles around the community. Alignment with Standards: 2-3.1 Summarize the role of community workers who provide goods and services. Developmental Appropriateness or Cross-curricular connections: This lesson will be important for students as they should know and understand the duties of community helpers and what they do to keep our communities safe. .

Lesson Objective(s)

Assessment(s) of the Objective(s) Pre-Assessment: Community helpers will be placed on the board, as student will be asked what each community helper does to keep our community safe. During Assessment: During the book My Mom Is A Firefighter Students will gather details, and discuss with partners and the teacher what they believe the role of Billys Mom is as a firefighter. After-Assessment: A group of volunteers will be called to the front of the classroom, and will be given different community helpers jobs to act out silently. Their classmates will identify which community helper is being acted out.

Use of Formative Assessment The assessments will be useful to gather usable data for others as to what students know about community helpers. Students should know who to contact for an emergency, and what each community helper does to keep the community safe.

Students will have the ability to identify community helpers, and their roles around the community.

Accommodations: Students unable to identify community helpers and their roles will have total access to the teacher,
and will be partnered with stronger students for guidance. The community helpers and their roles will remain on the board throughout the lesson. Students will have the front of the book being utilized during the lesson to refer to as well.

Procedures: 1.) Students will migrate to the carpet 2.) The policeman, firefighter, and doctor will be placed on the board for the students to see 3.) The students will give a description of what each community helper does 4.) The teacher will read the story My Mom Is a Firefighter. 5.) During the story the teacher will allow the students to partner talk about ideas of whats to happen in the story. 6.) Once the story is complete the teacher will complete a Ven-Diagram comparing and contrasting two community helpers (One being the fire-fighter). 7.) A group of three students will then be called up to the front of the class and asked to pull a piece of paper with a community helper on it. 8.) The students will act out the community helper, for the class to guess in silence 9.) The students will do an oral review, and return to their desk to continue with the day. Activity Analysis: The first activity that I plan to do with the class is to participate in the ven-diagram, comparing and contrasting a fire-fighter and one other community helper. This activity will show students just how similar community helpers are, and that they all have one responsibility and thats helping to keep the community safe. The second activity that I plan to do with the class will be the small charades game, where a group of three students will pull a community helper from a cup and act the helper out silently for the students to guess. This activity will re-assure the comprehension of the different community helpers.

Technology: The technology connection used throughout the lesson will include the smartboard. The students will use the smartboard for the completion of the ven-diagram as well as the community helpers. The smartboard is important because, without the smartboard teachers would face a difficult time creating accommodations for the students.
