A natural or artificial process that favors or

Selection

A group of organisms having many
characteristics in common and ranking below a
genus.
Organisms that reproduce sexually and belong
to the same species interbreed and produce
fertile offspring.
Species

the typical form or function to the same
species.

1. n order for evoIution to occur, there has to be variation.
2. Variation within a species increases the chance that some members of the
species will survive changes in the environment.
3. Depending on environmentaI conditions, inherited characteristics may be
advantageous, detrimental, or neutral to the survival of the individual.
4. NaturaI seIection occurs when factors in the environment select for or against
certain variations.
5. ndividuals with certain characteristics that fit their environment more
(adaptive characteristics) have better chances of survival and reproduction.
6. After few successive generations there will be relatively more individuals with
the adaptive characteristics, and the whole population within the species will
begin to change. That's evolution!

1. Explain how the color of the moths
increases or decreases their chances of
survival.
2. Explain the concept of "natural selection"
using the moths as an example.
3. What would happen if there were no
predators in the forest? Would the colors of the
moths change over time? Defend your answer!

1. The number of offsprings that an individual organism will
produce is interdependent on it's genetic variance and
environmentaI pressures.
2. Adaptation is the response of an organism to the seIection
processes caused by environmental pressures. f the organism
isn't fit enough to adapt the environmental requirements - it won't
survive, which may lead to species extinction.
3. Under certain circumstances adaptation will lead to formation
of new species.
