All Questions carry equal marks
?????

1. Sketch various types of multicylinder piston engine configuration. What are the
various components of a piston engine. Explain the operation of a four stroke
engine. [16]

2. (a) Explain the purpose of supercharger. What is a turbo charger? Define.

(b) Explain and sketch a typical lubrication system of a piston engine. [8+8]

3. (a) Define detonation. What is the cause of detonation and how it can be pre-
vented?
(b) Explain the concept of prewhirl.
(c) Define specific fuel consumption. [8+5+3]

4. (a) Sketch and explain briefly the centrifugal compressor characteristics.

(b) Explain the use of flame holder in a combustion chamber.
(c) Define manifold pressure in case of a piston engine. [9+5+2]

5. The following data refer to the eye of a single sided impeller. [16]
Inner radius = 6.5 cm
Outer radius = 15.0 cm
Speed = 270 rev/s
Mass flow = 8 kg/sec
Ambient conditions = 1.00 bar, 288K.
Assuming no prewhirl and no losses in the intake duct, calculate the blade inlet
angle at root and tip of the eye and the Mach Number at the tip of the eye.

6. (a) Explain and derive the expression for degree of reaction for an axial flow
compressor. What is the 500/0 degree of reaction and what does it signify.
(b) Explain briefly various types of combustion chamber with the help of sketches.

Inlet temperature To1 = 1050K
Inlet pressure po1 = 3.8 bar
Pressure ratio pp01

Outlet velocity C3 = 275 m/s
Blade speed at root radius Ur = 300 m/s
Turbine isentropic efficiency ηt = 0.88

The turbine is designed for zero reaction (Λ = 0) at the root radius and the velocities
at inlet and outlet (C1 & C3 ) are both equal and axial. Calculate the nozzle efflux
angle α2 and blade inlet gas angle β2 at the root radius.
If the tip/ root radius ratio of the annulus at exit from the nozzle blade is 1.4,
determine the nozzle efflux angle and degree of reaction at the tip radius.

8. Write notes on the following. [8×2=16]

(a) Vane less and vaned Diffuser.

(b) Carburetion and fuel injection.
