2. Comments on teacher candidate's effectiveness of overall instruction, use of developmentally appropriate strategies, ability to lead the class, professionalism, attitudes, and demeanor throughout the period of observation:

This was a first grade math class. The lesson was about finding 4 geometric shapes in real world setting. Ms. Howard first reviewed the 4 shapes. She them presented a Powerpoint with photos from around the school and from the field trip. Students were asked to come to the board to trace over one of the 4 shapes they saw. Ms. Howard used positive reinforcement consistently and asked higher order thinking questions. She coordinated work with the special education teacher assigned to the class. Ms. Howard then gave the children a worksheet with 6 blocks. They were to draw one of the four shapes in each box according to a photo on the screen. She demonstrated how to do this on paper first. Ms. Howard had about 15 minutes left in this class so she shifted into calendar skills, tally marks, skip counting and making change. The lesson was well executed and Ms. Howard showed a lot of flexibility when she had extra time left over at the end.
