Better familiarize students with the ending of Old Composers


Address predicted and experienced technical and stylistic concerns
Enable students to identify fundamentals of music (scales, etc.) in pieces to
facilitate learning

Materials

Score to Deck the Halls With Old Composers

Procedures

1. Students will begin by playing the concert E-flat major scale,


ascending/descending in half notes (tongued) accompanied by an eighth
note division in the snare drum.
2. Students will repeat this set of directions in quarter notes.
3. Students will play, listen to, and analyze the last 3 measures of Old Composers
4. Students will discuss how these figures relate to the warmup (same scale)
5. Students will play these measures again, paying attention to the use of the
descending scale.
6. Students will isolate the last chord of the piece, building it by Root, 5th, 3rd ;
pitch will be addressed as needed
7. Students will play the chord as a whole and grow to the correct dynamic as
prompted by the teacher.
8. Students will play the last chord at the correct duration and dynamic level.
9. Students will play mm. 54 end, putting the previous work in context.
10. Students will be lead by the teacher to any problem areas that need
addressed technically.
11. Students will analyze the music, paying special attention to dynamics and
which instrument has the most important melodic line.
12. Students will return to m. 54 and play to the end a final time, revisiting all the
content discussed in the lesson.

Assessment of Goals and Objectives


Assessment will be informal and achieved by observing students note/rhythmic


accuracy throughout the lesson. Any issues will be dealt with on a case-by-case
basis.
