CPR E 394 Assignment: Ethics No matter in which kind of workplace someone is caught inno matter the size, the different areasbut each situation is treated and should be treated by a set of codes of ethics. These not only are to be followed like rules, but they exist to facilitate the fruitful and effective communication in the area. Each area has different designated codes, but they are not far from each other with their goal of harmony. The purpose of following the Codes of Ethics provided is to remind every individual in the environment about those principles they should already knowregardless they already apply them by instinct. But, if the majority of the people think putting it on paper is irrelevant, why have it? Well, this is because even though some may have been taught and enforced morals, others tend to forget about how to reject bribery in all its forms (IEEE Code of Ethics, 2012) and so on. These codes exist to show others that, even though they may be independent from what they were taught when they were young, a successful work environment requires the application of morals. When Im on an ethical situation and find myself choosing between two possible approaches which will benefit medifferently but both waysI tend to go with my first thought. For instance, in the meeting with our faculty mentor, a team member brought up how he dealt with a lost wallet with a grand amount of money in it. Turn it in to lost and found, or keep that change? It was a really interesting discussion and seeing how everyones thought process wouldve gone. I, personally, wouldve gone with my first thought, which was: this is someone elses wallet. Meaning, I elaborate and brainstorm from that thought and get to the main unconscious point, which can go like this: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. This is someone elses wallet It doesnt belong to me Theyre going to look for it If it happened to me, I would love it to be returned Lost and found is just around the corner

It seems elaborate, but one you start, it doesnt take me more than five seconds to make an ethical decisionand you can say those five steps are for each second. I put myself on the other persons shoes, or just step out of my shoes for a moment. Another point of the codes of ethics is that theyre there to guide you, and you do the rest. We also discussed about cheating, which is basically the most common ethical situation a student might encounter in their academic journey. When everything looks too difficult and we find ourselves struggling to find a solutionwe sometimes run through that thought process in which that friend can pass you the homework and labs. However, my ethics approach doesnt entail copying, but looking for help. When Im struggling with a class, the second I dont understand something, I try to look for tutoring services or, if I know a friend, I will ask them

about the subject. I have been talked about the repercussions of cheating since a very young age, and Im more than clear that copying is not a solution to my understanding problems. First, it wont help me develop my knowledge and, second, it sets up a really bad example for what I want to conveya leader. The case study discussed in our small group was The Bay Area Transit (BART) system case. There was indeed a consensus on which ethical decision we considered was appropriate. It was the right thing to get the project revised. Hjortsvang and Blankezees decision was correctly executed, keeping in mind the ethics of the workplace. The repercussions included lawsuits, injuring others, and getting into way more trouble and endangering the environment than if they simple decided to stay silent about the issue. This is also another way to deal with ethical decisionscomparing and contrasting. What kind of consequences does each of my options face? Remember, not all consequences stops progression; some consequences are required to face progression, and so on. Another thing I took from this talk is that being truthful puts you in the good side of what many call karma, and life goes on from there. I really think this case brings out the importance of Integrity, Honesty and Fidelity to the company. All three of them connect dots into a triangle of morality, which I believe is relevant on this circumstance and many, many cases in the workplace. These two engineers used Integrity by staying strong with their morals and thoughts of stepping on others shoes. They also implemented Honesty with frankly stating and going against other opinions or views on delaying the project, simply doing what was right. And finally, their Fidelity showed how theyre followers of a companys code and also showed how loyal and good workers they could be for basically any company. They were an example of the application of morality while in the workplace. Even though I think Charity, Responsibility and Self-Discipline are important virtues, they are not as strongly applied on the situation. My opinion of morals and ethics stay very extraordinary and I highly intend to respect each code of ethics that Im presented with in my given environment. With the techniques that I apply plus the guidelines Im set, I believe stay strong to the integrity of any company and situations in my academic journey. Ethics are very important to have in the backand frontof your mind, because we all individually set an example to the world, and we have a purpose to show our little grain of sand and touch peoples lives.
