Overview:
Students will explore the different health concerns that relate to nutrition. They discover the proper nutrition relating to the health concerns, and will become aware of the symptoms to look for when dealing with possible health problems.

! ! ! Health Concerns Worksheet Health Concerns answer key Health concerns chart Students will each need a textbook if available to them, or each group will have one of the pre made information sheets.

Standards/Objectives: (Identify domain & level)


! ! Standard 5, Objective 2. Cognitive, Level 1 Students will explore health concerns incorporating guidelines from My Plate and current dietary guidelines throughout the life cycle. They will classify common food and nutrition related to health concerns.

Introduction/Set Induction (7 minutes):


PHASE 1: Identify objectives/goals of learning: Students will be introduced to the topic of health concerns relating to food by using a PowerPoint of startling facts that relate to the health concern. FIND YOUTUBE VIDEO THAT HAS STARTLING FACTS??

Transition (4 Minutes):
PHASE 2: Divide content into small learning activities/assessments: Divide the class into six groups. Each student will receive a hand out; they will fill out a small section of the hand out as they move from station to station. Each station will have an information sheet on the different health concerns. OR Students will be asked to retrieve their textbooks at this time. Each station around the classroom will have a printed piece of paper labeling which health concern they will be focusing on while there. Group 1: Anemia Group 2: Colon and Rectal Cancer Group 3: Diabetes Group 4: Hypoglycemia Group 5: Heart Disease Group 6: Osteoporosis PHASE 3: Identify materials and resources to be used by students:

Students will be provided with information sheets on each of the six health concerns. OR students will use their text books

Lesson Body (35 Minutes): (Mastery Learning)


For the main body of the class students will be working at each station to fill in their health concerns work sheet. Students should spend five minutes in each section.

Transition (2 Minutes):
Students will be asked to return back to their seats. One person from each table will be asked to get the health concerns matching worksheet for their entire group.

Assessment/Evaluation:
PHASE 4: Diagnostic Tests (Formative assessments implemented): Students will be provided with a Health Concerns matching worksheet. By completing this worksheet it will serve as a nice review for the state test. Student will have to remember what they read through out their stations in order to answer their questions. Whatever the students dont finish in class today they will be able to finish in the first ten minutes of class tomorrow.
