1-4 Mathematic Properties

• Properties are different ways that explain

how math works…sort of

• They explain things through addition and

multiplication.
• How are you SURE a “5” is really a “5”?
Use the
“Identity Property of Addition”

You add a “0” to it, then you know it

really is a “5”.

5+0=5
• Identity Property of Multiplication

SO you’re still not convinced that “5” is

telling the truth…
To be absolutely sure, you can test it by
multiplying it by “1”.

5• 1 =5 Ok, his identity is

correct.
Multiplication Property of Zero
5•0=0
1,234,456,837,900 • 0 = 0
a(0) = 0

Oh come on!
Are you for
real?
Multiplication Inverses
• Two numbers that multiply to equal 1 are
called inverses.

3 • 1/3 = 1

3/7 • 7/3 = 1

(Just “flip the fraction” to get the inverse)

Reflexive Property
• Any quantity is equal to itself.

16 = 16
2+3=2+3
5–x=5–x
Ok. This is ridiculous.
Substitution Property
One quantity may substitute in for its equal
in any expression.

If n = 5 then

3n = 3(5)
Symmetric Property
• You can switch sides around the equal
sign.

3+3=6
is the same as
6=3+3
Transitive Property
• Involves THREE expressions that are all
equal…

If 3+3 = 6
and 2+4 = 6
THEN 3+3 = 2+4
