SCN 494 FINAL PROJECT LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE Youre Name: Stephanie Amaton Title of Lesson: What are

the Effects of Deforestation? Grade: 3 STANDARDS

3-L-S4-4. Make a claim about the merit of a solution to a problem caused when the environment changes and the types of plants and animals that live there may change. (3.W.2) Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly. LESSON SUMMARY/OVERVIEW

This lesson provides students with the opportunity to reflect on what they have learned on deforestation. They will write a detailed piece about how to find or become a part of a solution for one of the effects of deforestation. Students will be writing about loss of biodiversity. The lesson offers time for student-to-student interaction and individual work. The lesson starts out with the question being stated, goes into a time of reflection for the students, and ends with the independent assignment. OBJECTIVES

Students will be able to write about a solution to what they think should be done to improve loss of biodiversity due to deforestation. Students will be able to create an informative text that backs up their solution by introducing the topic and developing the facts.

ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION The students will complete a 4-paragraph text that develops their solution to deforestation. Each paragraph must have 4-5 sentences to get full credit.

Paragraph 1: Introduction Paragraph 2: How was the solution found or thought of Paragraph 2: what is the solution for the loss of biodiversity through deforestation Paragraph 3: Conclusion

PREREQUISITE KNOWLEDGE Prior to this lesson, students need to know information about the loss of biodiversity and what deforestation is. Students will be reminded of some the different animals and plants that are endangered which is caused from deforestation, and what are some of the solutions. Students may also need to be reminded what is expected of them when writing an essay. Prompts such as how many sentences should be included in a paragraph, transition words, and organization. MATERIALS Planning Web

TEACHING PROCEDURES 1. On the projector connect your laptop and bring up the World Wildlife website on deforestation and scroll down to Impacts read about the different species that are affected. 2. Ask the students to choose a topic (either plants or animals) that interests them and think of why they are choosing this topic. 3. Give the students a minutes or two to think independently and then them to share. 4. Remind students of the different solutions to deforestation such as, buying wood and paper that is FSC labeled, Informing others about buying only sustainably managed products, or joining a committed conservation cause from an organization and looking into adopting an animal from the wild and giving whatever you can to save this animals life. 5. Give the students a minute to think independently and then tell them to share with their partner what they chose as a solution and why. 6. Walk around the class and make sure everyone is participating for in both discussions listen for key topics and solutions such as I chose the loss of biodiversity and a solution for this will be adopting and animal to help. 7. Bring class together and call randomly on students and have them share with the rest of the class what they came up with for their topic and the solution. 8. Make a list on the board and make sure the topic and solutions they come up with are appropriate 9. Inform the students that today they will be writing an essay about the topic they have chosen and then they will incorporate a solution or solutions that can be implemented in order for deforestation to be less destructive and hopefully soon come to an end.

10. The students will be using Values Thinking to complete this assignment. Students will thinking about the cascading effects of deforestation on their chosen topic and recognize the patterns and relationships among problems and possible solutions. Use the words Systems Thinking so the students know what type of thinking they are implementing. 11. Show planning web on the projector and explain what each bubble needs to have (introduction, body paragraph one, body paragraph two, conclusion). 12. Communicate expectations one more time: They are to choose a topic and a solution to write about. They must create an informative essay that provides a solution to their topic with developed facts. Have these expectations on the projector for students to see. 13. Pass out the planning web and have paper available for students to use once they are done with their web. 14. Once they are done have students read about the different animals that can be adopted helped through the World Wildlife This will prevent students from off task behavior and let others finish their work. Provide a complete explanation of how your lesson plan connects to futures, system, strategic, or values thinking. Define the way of thinking you selected and used in this lesson plan. Remember, this should be included meaningfully in the lesson plan.

First define Systems Thinking, which is dynamics that have cascading effects, feedback loops, and system states. It recognizes patterns and underlying relationships among problems and possible solutions. Refer back to what they have learned the objectives and their topics. Using Systems Thinking students should be able to write about what they think should be done to solve the problem. Students will be able to write about a solution to what they think should be done to improve loss of biodiversity due to deforestation. Students should have enough information on these subjects for them to be able to elaborate their thoughts. They have learned about why deforestation has happened and now they have learned about the effects of deforestation.
