Ciavarella Professor Lago English 1100 November 11th 2013 Salary Gaps and Cultural Influence Pay gaps are a natural phenomenon, which occurs when a job or a service is numerically valued for its difficulty, time requirements, and the time and effort it takes to prepare yourself for said job or service. For example, a doctor would be paid more than a waitress because doctors must attend a grand amount of education to become a doctor, while a waitress must only have the generally capabilities of walking, talking, and taking orders. This kind of a salary gap is understandable and expected. But a few salary or pay gaps are evident in certain jobs that may seem unfair. Pay gaps are seemingly particularly present in those careers that are dangerous or unwanted, as well as those in the service industry. There have been a few concepts or reasons discussed for this prevalent gap. But some gaps are only present because of the value the culture places on said salary. Additionally, salary gaps can become evident when age, race, and even height are factored in. Cultural value is one of strongest factors in determining pay. Globally the issue of gender discrimination is virtually always present. in [The United States] 1990 , womens average weekly pay was equal to approximately 77% of mens average weekly pay. (Heckert, 139). A few reasons exist for this gap. In the case of gender discrimination, a reason for the gap is simply historical. From the beginning of the Paleolithic era women took care of children and men did most of the heavy lifting, hunting, and provided

It was believed that women were simply not a working class of people. Only in 1923 did the ERA (Equal Rights Amendment) become integrated into the United States culture. It stated Men and women shall have equal rights throughout the United States and every place subject to its jurisdiction. This give rights to both men and women to do the same jobs, and made it illegal to tell a man or a woman otherwise. Yet still, in the 21st century men and women are paid unequally according to a study at Vanderbilt University. Across an average of job salaries from CEOs positions, to management jobs, men earn up to one and a half times more than women (IOMA Report).
