Jones English Language Arts H 1-2 11 December 2013 Power of Love Romeo oh thy Romeo These lines from the iconic Shakespeare novel Romeo and Juliet make you think of two love-struck children that died while madly in love with each other. The depth of the passion between these two lovebirds is stronger than any romance every documented. In Shakespeares novel he illustrates Romeos passionate emotions through vivid imagery, figurative language and by providing insight to Romeos thoughts. On that note, when imagery is used in Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare draws attention as to how Romeo views Juliet. Romeo gazes in awe at Juliet as she sits on her balcony in a way that the powerful feelings he has for her nearly become your own. A moment of great impact when this really shows is when Romeo says, See how she leans her check upon her hand. Oh, that I were a glove upon her hand that I might touch that check. Romeo is explaining that he longs to touch her face, such as her own hand. With the extensive imagery Shakespeare uses you are not only to visualize what Romeo thinks but also what he feels. Equally important, the next element Shakespeare weaved into Romeo and Juliet is figurative language. The comparisons he draws to characters help convey emotions that would be invisible otherwise. In his novel Romeo voices several comparisons. One representation of this is when Romeo states It is the east, and Juliet is the sun. Arise fair sun, and kill the envious moon When Shakespeare wrote this, his intention was to implement the idea that Juliet is not only the light of Romeos life but also what makes his world go round. By using figurative
