Zhu, Wang 1 Yiying Zhu, Yilei Wang (Estella) Kristen Foster CO 150 16 December 2013 Explanation of the Rhetorical

Choices a. According to statistics, more than 25 million vertebrate animals are used for researches and tests on drugs in United States alone per year (Questions and Answers about Biomedical Research). Cases are pretty the same in other countries like the United Kingdom. In 2012, approximately 4.11 million experiments on animals were conducted in UK and the number of animals being killed in testing is increasing (Animal Experiments: Overview). Such massive killings are cruel and unethical. Actions should be taken to protect those innocent animals from death and disability. The reasons that I choose this topic are listed as follows. First, innocent animals are being killed in a great amount, so actions should be taken right now to protect them. Second, the animal testing has been a heated topic in bioscience field. Some people argue for rights and welfare for animals while others think the development of bioscience for humans is more important. The controversy leads me to this topic. b. My purpose is to convince the drug factory owners to limit animal testing and hopefully they can adopt more alternatives to replace animals in testing for drugs. I choose this purpose because using animals to test drugs is getting very serious and it takes great responsibility for killing animals in researches every year. Drug factory owners, however, can make the change. With alternatives being adopted, the number of animals used in experiments can be greatly reduced.

Zhu, Wang 2 c. My claim is that people working in pharmaceutical industry, drug factory owners in particular, should adopt more alternatives to limit the number of animals used in drug testing. First, it is inhumane to use animals in testing. I used the peer-reviewed journal written by Hope R. Ferdowsian and a paper from Tom Regan to support this reason. Second, alternatives are more accurate than animal testing. Statistics are displayed to show that animal testing is not reliable and new technologies and quotations from professors are used to argue that alternatives provide more accurate data. Third, alternatives take less time and money. The comparison on time and money between animal testing and alternatives are displayed by using statistics. I also describe the authority of the organization that creates those technologies and data so that my reasons would sound more credible. d. My intended audience is drug factory owners because they have the power in deciding what to use in testing for drugs. As long as they are convinced to use more alternatives in animal testing, the number of animals used in testing can be greatly reduced. According to my knowledge, drug factory owners concerns most about money and efficiency because they want to make more profits. They also worry about the safety of the drug since they want to build a good reputation and thus making more money. My first reason is from the ethical perspective. I want to arouse their sympathy and humanity. The second reason is for the safety of the drug, which is one of their worries. My third reason is from the efficiency and the cost of doing testing, which is their greatest concern. e. We will publish this website by using Weebly and are hoping to get attached a link by professional organizations as a promotion of alternatives in animal testing. For example, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in

Zhu, Wang 3 United States. First of all, website can provide more information as we need than a single piece of poster or brochure. Besides, since this is a serious matter and our intended public audience is also professional, it is essential for us to perform it in a professional way and get linked with authoritative organization like the WHO and FDA. Both organizations have great impact on drug factories and take the leading role in drug industry. Whats more, as far as we know, both of them have official website and FDA is now encouraging such alternatives in drug testing (Animal Testing and Cosmetics). f. We choose the genre of website. A website requires effective content writing and attractive graphics (Website Design Guidelines and Conventions). It will help a lot if we can highlight the main points by using a symbol or bold the title so that it makes it easier for people to read (Website Design Guidelines and Conventions). It is also essential to make the home button clear on each page (Hunt). To meet these conventions, we summarize the assignment four and got some photos from the Internet. We also make our title and main points very clear by using bigger fonts. The home button is always on the top -left side of each page so that people can get back to main page whenever they want. g. The argument doesnt define the definition of limit. Audience or public may ask to what extent drug factory owners should limit animals in drug testing. Using website may be not powerful enough to persuade those businessmen to adopt new methods. Other genres like ads and presentations performed in professional ways are also needed to further achieve our purpose.
