* Nerm- Into the Woods (PVCC Summer 2009) This version of the classic
musical had an interesting twist added to it-a “movement chorus” of “wood
spirits” technically referred to as “nerms.” Inspired by the fairies in “A
Midsummer Night’s Dream,” nerms were first created by director Mark
Stoddard and choreographer Kathleen Brazie back in 2004 when this
musical was performed at Scottsdale Community College. They worked
together again for the PVCC 2009 show and utilized the concept for the
second time. This group of characters was there to motivate and react to
everything that was going on with the main characters throughout the show,
and as a manifestation of subtext; a presentation of internal resources and
influence to the decisions made by the main characters. They were also
dancers in the musical numbers-a completely unique style of dancing, best
referred to as a mix of lyrical and improv. The characters were completely
unaware of the presence of the nerms until the finale of the show.
