Backward facing step flow problem:

Abstract: CFD analysis for a laminar flow in a backward facing step problem will be performed to understand the physical phenomena of fluid flowing through a rectangular step channel having a constant surface temperature. Special interest will be given throughout the recirculation and reattached region to gain further understanding of separation and reattachment of boundary layer. Mesh independence study will be made to reduce the changeability in numerically obtained solution. Effect on pressure, temperature and velocity profile along the various regions of geometry will be analyzed while varying the dimensions and boundary conditions. Velocity, temperature, pressure profiles and vortices obtained from this backward step flow will be compared with the published literatures for validation.
