PSII Professional Growth Plan Name: Chris Shimbashi School: CCH Practicum Dates: Sept.

Teacher Mentors: Shawn LeBleu/Telus Boudreau Date Completed: Dec. 20 A. PSIII Practicum Goals

Goal #1: To improve planning practices by preparing note packages/assignments, lesson plans, labs and tests a week in advance (including printing). Rationale: During my PSII I felt that this was one specific area that I was weak in; normally I would be planned for each day the day prior to teaching (consulting with my TAs as to what I should cover the next day). This current semester the format for how the current class is being taught has changed, so I am developing a lot of the assignments and lectures from scratch, so it will be difficult to organize for the whole semester. However I feel it would be realistic to try and catch up to be planned for 1 week in advance. This will give me more time to prepare for implementation of different learning and assessment strategies. This would help also me free up mornings for more administrative duties and marking. Goal #2: Use various instruction strategies (CCH focuses) in lessons to aid in vitalizing the learning environment in my classroom. Rationale: I have a certain pattern/routine to the way I am teaching the Science 24 students. The routine is based on three areas: lecture time (short), lab time, and guided note taking/assignment time. I would like to add in various instructional strategies such as group work, group whiteboards, think-pair-share, visual graphics to represent ideas, jigsaws etc. (there is a list of strategies CCH teachers are encouraged to use). B. Strategies and Resources for Addressing Goals (How I will go about achieving my goals?) Strategies for addressing Goal #1: Devote Block 1 for creating resources for class, block 2 will be devoted for administrative duties. Do necessary lab prep/purchases the night before (not the day of). Before each lab or performance assessment: practice the sequence and delivery of procedural instruction in my prep room.

Strategies for addressing Goal #2: Create a new section in my lesson plans indicating which instructional strategies I will be using. Allow students to do guided notes first instead of a lecture and use various instructional strategies to reinforce learning (in the place of the lecture time). Ask teacher mentor to give suggestions as to which strategies to employ. Use exit slips to monitor student progress/preference.

C. Indicators of Achievement of Goals (How I will know when and if I have achieved my goals?) Indicators of Progress for Goal #1: Create and maintain a checklist to maintain personal accountability

Indicators of Progress for Goal #2: Review of lesson plans will indicate as to which strategies I am using. Create a simple spreadsheet to monitor which strategies are being used/which are not.

D. Reflections on Professional Growth: My goal to stay a week ahead in planning was unsuccessful during the first quarter. This was mainly due to the amount of prep that I took before each class. Each class I prepared a notes package, a notebook lesson, and usually an experiment. I was able to get all my prep done, but it was usually just one day in advance. In most cases I was setting up experiments in the morning before class. However during the second quarter I used another teachers resources and found that I could have all of my rudimentary lesson planning done a week in advance My goal to us a variety of instruction methods was more successful in the first quarter than in the second quarter. In the first quarter I found myself reviewing lesson plans more and ensuring that I was using a variety of different lesson plans. However in the second quarter I found that I was stressed about covering the content in time, that I often did not focus on how the content was being delivered as much.
