Need to protect civilians and human rights in South Sudan, says NGO alliance InterAction WASHINGTON, D.C. (Dec 19, 2013) In response to the conflict that broke out in South Sudan on Dec. 15, NGO alliance InterAction urges the U.S. government to use its diplomatic leverage to obtain immediate commitments from all parties to cease hostilities, protect civilians, respect human rights and ensure access for humanitarian assistance. The fighting which began in the capital city Juba and has spread north to Jonglei state has left hundreds dead, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Human rights groups have reported that civilians are being targeted based solely on their ethnicity. Hundreds of civilians have been injured in the fighting; at least 13,000 displaced people have sought shelter in the two main Juba bases of the UN peacekeeping mission (UNMISS). The violence has also displaced civilians in Bor, the Jonglei state capital in the north, InterAction is alarmed by the violence erupting in South Sudan. The parties need to cease hostilities immediately and resolve their differences peacefully, said Joel Charny, vice president of humanitarian policy and practice at InterAction, the largest alliance of U.S.-based international NGOs. The U.S., whose support was vital to creating the independent state of South Sudan, needs to impress upon the conflicting parties the necessity of stopping attacks against civilians and allowing live-saving aid to reach people in need. Further, we encourage UNMISS to fully exercise its mandate, including to prevent violence against civilians and to protect at-risk populations from imminent threats, such as acts of gender-based violence.
