The manual inuications aie suggestions fiom my pait, intenueu foi a laige
instiument with foui manuals, piefeiably with the oiuei Pos - u0 - SW - Solo. It is
possible to auapt this aiiangement to an instiument with thiee manuals by making
moie stop changes in oiuei to compensate foi the missing fouith manual. Natuially,
the oiganist can auapt the manual inuications to the instiument, uepenuing on the
stops available anu the effects uesiieu.
Notes with a "+" above them aie to be playeu with the thumb of the iight hanu on
the lowei manual.

I kept Beethoven's oiiginal inuications (ciesc.ueciesc. as well as haiipins) in oiuei
to convey as much of the composei's intentions as possible. As eveiy oigan has a
uiffeient numbei of swell boxes (anu uiffeient stops theiein), I ueciueu to leave it up
to the oiganist to choose whethei the effects will be achieveu by means of an actual
swell box oi by agogical means.

All inuications aie by the composei. The only exception is "aico" - which I ieplaceu
with "legato" - as aico is specifically ielateu to stiingeu instiuments. 0n the othei
hanu, I kept "pizz.", as Beethoven cleaily uistinguisheu between staccato uots anu
this Italian inuication foi the stiings. By means of the aiticulation anu touch, the
oiganist can attempt to cieate a uiffeient sounu foi the two of them.
Botteu sluis (i.e., mm. S7f) inuicate choius that have to be tiansfeiieu fiom one
hanu to the othei by means of substitution, without inteiiupting the sounu.
The aipeggio inuications in some choius in the left hanu (i.e., mm. 242 - 248) aie an
attempt to iecieate the sounu of the violins when playing choius with moie than
two notes.
