PREFACE

edition of seven hundred copies of a four hundred fifty page book which

was printed in 1933 by the Powers Press of Ames, Iowa. The informal

edition was used in eleven colleges by at least eighteen instructors, many

of whom have given helpful constructive criticisms.

In addition to the acknowledgments which have been made in the

text for material from other sources, especial appreciation for splendid

cooperation and the use of drawings, photographs, tables, and other

material is expressed to the American Association of State Highway
