Introduction
All praise is to Allah. We ask Allah, the Most High, to send peace and blessings
upon Muhammad, the last Messenger. And what follows:
Dua is worship. Dua is the essence and foundation of worship to the All-Powerful Lord,
Allah. The servant makes Dua to his Master and Owner. We are explicitly commanded
to make Dua to our Lord.

2:186. And when My slaves ask you concerning Me, then, I am indeed near. I
respond to the invocations of the supplicant when he calls on Me. So let them
obey Me and believe in Me, so that they may be led aright.
In summary:
We must make Dua.
Make it to only Allah, alone.
Be certain that He will respond.
There are more principles in making Dua that are also well known. For example, use
the beautiful names of Allah: Al-Aleem, Al-Qayum, etc. Oh Allah, the Most Wise, grant
me wisdom and knowledge. Asking for something haram like intoxicants is forbidden.
One of the companions was blind, and he was famous for his duas being accepted. So
the people asked him, Why dont you ask Allah for your eyesight? He replied, The
Qadr of Allah is more beloved to me than my eyesight. Are we pleased with the decree
of Allah?
Would it not be better if my heart was attached to Allah who really deserves my love,
fear, and hope? What can give me eternal life of happiness? Wealth, fame, nor family
can give me the ultimate success. Allah is greater.
11
Want to have Allah on your side? Fearing the Hell-Fire, hoping for his paradise, and
loving Him for His infinite blessings are some emotions to have in our Dua and worship.
Be awed by His might and perfection, and avoid anything that might displease Him.
His hair is disheveled. Dirt covers his clothes. While raising his hands up high, he calls
out, My Lord! > The hajji makes dua. But, how can his dua be accepted? His clothes
and food are from haram sources. Maybe he sells beer or is a banker engulfed in
usury> This hadith tells us that our income must be from Halal sources for our dua to
be fully accepted.
Abu Bakr eats some food that his servant brought. The servant tells him how he
acquired the food. The servant had acquired it in a wrong way. Abu Bakr makes himself
vomit. Sustenance procured through haram means is not conducive for Dua.
Haste is another mistake in making dua. One should never give up. Keep asking Allah
for your needs even if it takes decades. Just look at the great prophet Ibrahim (peace
be upon him). After many years, Allah blessed him with a son. Or take the example of
Ayub and Zakarai, they were not impatient in their dua. Having an instant gratification
attitude is not the proper way of making dua. They were persistent in asking Allah and
never gave up hope. Only the disbeliever gives up hope in the mercy of Allah.
Indeed, I am Near
2:186
What do we really want? What will benefit us the most in this life and the next?
Turn to the Quran. The comprehensive, eloquent, and concise Duas in the Quran are
the best. You get reward for saying them and also for invoking Allah, the Possessor of
all Might and Glory.
You want to ask for the best of the best. How would you ask for a trillion dollars? No, it
is more valuable than a trillion dollars. How do you phrase your request? How do you
ask for something that is priceless?
Where do I begin in praising Allah? Truly, I can not do justice in praising the Most
Merciful. Still, I need to praise and thank Him. It is in our Fitra to worship our Creator,
the Ever-Living. So let us go to the Quran, the speech of Allah. We praise Him as He
has praised Himself. The best way to express our wishes is from the Quran and
Sunnah.
Who is Allah? He is the one who responds to our duas. He is very near. He is ready to
accept our repentance and supplication. We can not repeat this often enough:

2:186. And when My slaves ask you concerning Me, then, I am indeed near. I
respond to the invocations of the supplicant when he calls on Me. So let them obey Me
and believe in Me, so that they may be led aright.
Develop a relationship with Allah. Remember Allah, the Most Wise, in easy and hard
times. Keep in contact with Him by praying and making dua to Him. Make Dua to Allah
yourself. Dont always ask other people to make dua for you. Why should I go to a
slave when I can go to the Master? Feel the sweetness of Faith by calling out to the
Sustainer of the Worlds for help. Making Dua to Allah strengthens the connection with
the One who is able to do all things.
How to make Dua.

2.
3.
4.
Take advantage of certain times. In Salah. In Sijda. In last part of night. When you are
wronged. When FASTING. When Traveling. Do not watch TV or movies while you are
traveling or fasting. Use this time for making Duas.
There are some Duas that are so comprehensive and concise that I could not place
them in any category. Use it for anything and at any time.
Sleep
1a. After Waking up
Praise is to Allah who gave us life after death and to Him is the return.
1b. After Waking up
13
None has the right to be worshipped except Allaah, alone, without any partner, to Him
belong sovereignty and praise and He is over all things wholly capable. How perfect
Allaah is, and all praise is for Allaah, and none has the right to be worshipped except
Allaah, Allaah is the greatest and there is no power nor might except with Allaah, The
Most High, The Supreme, O my Lord forgive me
1c. After Waking up
All praise is for Allaah who restored to me my health and returned my soul and has allowed me
to remember Him.
2a. Before Sleeping
14
The Prophet (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) also said: Whoever recites the last two
Aayahs of Soorah al-Baqarah at night, those two Aayahs shall be sufficient for him
2:284. To Allah belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on the earth, and
whether you disclose what is in your own selves or conceal it, Allah will call you to
account for it. Then He forgives whom He wills and punishes whom He wills. And Allah
is Able to do all things.
2:285. The Messenger believes in what has been sent down to him from his Lord, and
the believers also believe. Each one believes in Allah, His Angels, His Books, and His
Messengers. They say, "We make no distinction between His Messengers" - and they
say, "We hear, and we obey. Forgive us, our Lord, and to You is the return."
286. Allah burdens not a person beyond his scope. He gets reward for that which he
has earned, and he is punished for that which he has earned. "Our Lord! Punish us not if
we forget or fall into error, our Lord! Lay not on us a burden like that which You did lay
on those before us. Our Lord, do not burden us greater than we have strength to bear.
Pardon us and grant us Forgiveness. Have mercy on us. You are our Protector and give
us victory over the disbelieving people."
2b. Before Sleeping
15
In Your name my Lord, I lie down and in Your name I rise, so if You should take my soul then
have mercy upon it, and if You should return my soul then protect it in the manner You do so
with Your righteous servants.
O Allaah, verily You have created my soul and You shall take its life, to You belong its life
and death. If You should keep my soul alive then protect it, and if You should take its life then
forgive it. O Allaah, I ask You to grant me good health.
16
O Allaah, protect me from Your punishment on the day Your servants are resurrected. [three
times]
2e. Before Sleeping
17
O Allaah, Lord of the seven heavens and the exalted throne, our Lord and Lord of all things,
Splitter of the seed and the date stone, Revealer of the Towraat, the Injeel and the Furqaan, I take
refuge in You from the evil of all things You shall seize by the forelock . O Allaah, You are The
First so there is nothing before You and You are The Last so there is nothing after You. You are
ath-Thaahir so there is nothing above You and You are al-Baatin so there is nothing closer than
You. Settle our debt for us and spare us from poverty.
All praise is for Allaah, Who fed us and gave us drink, and Who is sufficient for us and has
sheltered us, for how many have none to suffice them or shelter them.
18
2H. Before Sleeping
O Allaah, Knower of the seen and the unseen, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Lord and
Sovereign of all things I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped except You. I take
refuge in You from the evil of my soul and from the evil and shirk of the devil, and from
committing wrong against my soul or bringing such upon another Muslim.
2i. Before Sleeping
19
O Allaah, I submit my soul unto You, and I entrust my affair unto You, and I turn my face
towards You, and I totally rely on You, in hope and fear of You. Verily there is no refuge nor
safe haven from You except with You. I believe in Your Book which You have revealed and in
Your Prophet whom You have sent.
... If you die after saying this, you die in a natural state (Fitrah)
2j. Before Sleeping - The Prophet (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) never used to sleep
until he had recited Soorah as-Sajdah (32) and Soorah al-Mulk (67)
DREAM
2k. Upon seeing a good dream or a bad dream
The righteous dream is from Allaah and the bad dream is from the devil, so if anyone sees
something which pleases him then he should only relate it to one whom he loves...
20
Summary of what to do upon having a bad dream:
spit on your left three times.
Seek refuge in Allaah from Shaytaan and the evil of what you saw three times.
Do not relate it to anyone.
Turn and sleep on the opposite side to which you were sleeping on previously.
Get up and pray if you so desire.
2L. Experiencing unrest or fear during sleep
I take refuge in the perfect words of Allaah from His anger and punishment, and from the evil of
His servants, and from the madness and appearance of devils.

3c. Someone wearing new clothes, say to him:
May you wear it out and Allaah (Ta'aala) replace it [with another].

be oppressed, or behave foolishly or be treated foolishly

In the name of Allaah we enter and in the name of Allaah we leave, and upon our Lord we place
our trust.
...and then one should greet his family with salaam.
6d. When mounting an animal or any means of transport
25
In the name of Allaah and all praise is for Allaah. How perfect He is, the One Who has placed
this [transport] at our service and we ourselves would not have been capable of that, and to our
Lord is our final destiny. All praise is for Allaah, All praise is for Allaah, All praise is for Allaah.
Allaah is the greatest, Allaah is the greatest, Allaah is the greatest. How perfect You are, O
Allaah, verily I have wronged my soul, so forgive me, for surely none can forgive sins except
You.
6e. Supplication upon entering a town or village
26
O Allaah, Lord of the seven heavens and all that they envelop, Lord of the seven earths and all
that they carry, Lord of the devils and all whom they misguide, Lord of the winds and all whom

for all the goodness found within it and I take refuge with You from the evil of this village, the
evil of its inhabitants and from all the evil found within it.
6f. Entering the market or store

23:29. My Lord! Cause me to land at a blessed landing-place, for You are the Best of
those who bring to land.
29
May a witness, be witness to our praise of Allaah for His favours and bounties upon us. Our
Lord, protect us, show favour on us and deliver us from every evil. I take refuge in Allaah from
the fire.
6m. While returning from travel
Ibn 'Umar (radhi-yAllaahu 'anhaa) reported that the Messenger of Allaah (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa
sallam) on return from a battle or from performing the pilgrimage would say at every high point:
Allaah is the greatest, Allaah is the greatest, Allaah is the greatest. ...and then he would say:
30
None has the right to be worshipped except Allaah, alone, without any partner. To Him belong
all sovereignty and praise, and He is over all things omnipotent. We return, repent, worship and
praise our Lord. Allaah fulfilled His promise, aided His Servant, and single-handedly defeated
the allies.

within my eyes light; and place above me light; and beneath me light; and on my right light; and
on my left light; and in front of me light; and behind me light; and place light within my soul; and
augment light for me; and greaten light for me; and grant me light and make me light. O Allaah,
bestow upon me light; and place light in my tendons; and light in my flesh; and light in my
blood; and in light in my hair and light in my skin. [O Allaah, place light for me in my grave and
light in my bones]. [And increase me with light and increase me with light and increase me with
light]. [And grant me light upon light.]

O Allaah, distance me from my sins just as You have distanced The East from The West. O
Allaah, purify me of my sins as a white robe is purified of filth. O Allaah, cleanse me of my sins
with snow, water, and hail.
8b. Supplication at the start of the prayer [after takbeer]
35
How perfect You are O Allaah, and I praise You. Blessed be Your name, and lofty is Your
majesty and none has the right to be worshipped except You.
8c. Supplication at the start of the prayer [after takbeer]
36
I have turned my face sincerely towards He who has brought forth the heavens and the earth and
I am not of those who associate [others with Allaah]. Indeed my prayer, my sacrifice, my life and
my death are for Allaah, Lord of the worlds, no partner has He, with this I am commanded and I
am of the Muslims. O Allaah, You are the Sovereign, none has the right to be worshipped except
You. You are my Lord and I am Your servant, I have wronged my own soul and have
acknowledged my sin, so forgive me all my sins for no one forgives sins except You. Guide me
to the best of characters for none can guide to it other than You, and deliver me from the worst of
characters for none can deliver me from it other than You. Here I am, in answer to Your call,

O Allaah, Lord of Jibreel, Meekaa.eel and Israafeel [great angels], Creator of the heavens and
the earth, Knower of the seen and the unseen. You are the arbitrator between Your servants in
that which they have disputed. Guide me to the truth by Your leave, in that which they have
differed, for verily You guide whom You will to a straight path.
38
Allaah is Most Great, Allaah is Most Great, Allaah is Most Great, much praise is for Allaah,
much praise is for Allaah, much praise is for Allaah, and I declare the perfection of Allaah in the
early morning and in the late afternoon. [three times]
I take refuge with Allaah from the devil, from his pride, his poetry and his madness.
8f. Supplication at the start of the prayer [after takbeer]
39
40
O Allaah, to You belongs all praise, You are the Light of the heavens and the earth and all that is
within them. To You belongs all praise, You are the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and all
that is within them. To You belongs all praise. You are Lord of the heavens and the earth and all

16. Seeking guidance in forming a decision or choosing the proper course
On the authority of Jaabir Ibn 'Adbullaah (radhi-yAllaahu 'anhu), he said: The
Prophet (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) would instruct us to pray for guidance in
all of our concerns, just as he would teach us a Soorah from the Qur.aan. He
(sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) would say If any of you intends to undertake a
matter then let him pray two supererogatory units [two rak'ah naafilah] of prayer
and after which he should supplicate:
63
64
O Allaah, I seek Your counsel by Your knowledge and by Your power I seek strength and I ask
you from Your immense favour, for verily You are able while I am not and verily You know
while I do not and You are the Knower of the unseen. O Allaah, if You know this affair -and here
he mentions his need- to be good for me in relation to my religion, my life, and end, then decree
and facilitate it for me, and bless me with it, and if You know this affair to be ill for me towards
my religion, my life, and end, then remove it from me and remove me from it, and decree for me
what is good wherever it be and make me satisfied with such.
One who seeks guidance from his Creator and consults his fellow believers and then
remains firm in his resolve does not regret, for Allaah has said:
...and consult them in the affair. Then when you have taken a decision put your trust in Allaah...
[Soorah Aal 'Imraan, Aayah 159]
65
O Allaah, guide me along with those whom You have guided, pardon me along with those
whom You have pardoned, be an ally to me along with those whom You are an ally to and bless
for me that which You have bestowed. Protect me from the evil You have decreed for verily You
decree and none can decree over You. For surety, he whom you show allegiance to is never
abased and he whom You take as an enemy is never honoured and mighty. O our Lord, Blessed

Important Notes:
Arabic translations are not literal. Translations concentrate on conveying the meaning
easily and fluently.
125
There are many duas for each occasion and situation, and only a few are chosen so that
the reader is not overwhelmed. This will keep the book small and handy.
We must make dua and effort. They have to be together. No matter how small the
action is; Allah will put blessing into it. For example, someone supplicates, Oh Allah,
give me a child who will be a defender of Islam, but he does not get married.
