This publication is comprised of an edited transcript of members of the Kennedy School’s Executive Session on Policing. The topic of discussion was “The Evolving Strategy of Policing,” and the discussion was divided by three different policing eras, the political era, the reform era, and the community problem-solving era. Members of this session include police chiefs, mayors, scholars, and others who play a role in policing practices.
This publication devotes a considerable amount of its focus to the uses of community-based policing and problem-oriented policing to look at the potential for these practices in the future as well as the ways police agencies are adopting those strategies during that time. The intent of this publication is the create a dialogue about policing and to encourage policymakers and police chiefs to change the way they view policing to include some of the new strategies and practices proposed by these members.
