Essential Question(s): What is the meaning of Pathos, Logos and Ethos? How do these concepts relate to advertising? What are advertising names for rhetorical strategies that are used to persuade? Other considerations (modifications, accommodations, acceleration, etc.):

Connections (prior learning/prior knowledge): Ask students about their reactions to ads what kinds of ads attract them, what kinds of ads repel them. Ask if they can identify the traits in ads that attract them or repel them.

TUESDAY Learning TargetStudents will apply their knowledge of logos, ethos and pathos by writing an email to me using all three rhetorical strategies. Students will present information to the class by reading their rhetorical emails aloud. Students will demonstrate understanding of the three rhetorical devices used in ads by correctly labeling them in ads they watch, and by taking a quiz.

Students will complete a worksheet matching ad copy to one of the 3 rhetorical devices. Students will watch ads and see if they can identify the rhetorical strategy/strategies used in them (first in pairs and then as part of a discussion).

WEDNESDAY Learning TargetStudents will review definitions of modern marketing terms and show their understanding by writing down examples of ads theyve seen that use these strategies (working in pairs, then sharing with the class). Students apply their knowledge of marketing strategies by identifying which strategies are being used in various ads. Students will cite evidence to back up their claims by writing down clues from each ad that led them to make their conclusions.
