Ethnic Conflict

Ethnic conflict is a quarrel which often occurs as a result of nationalism. Such

a conflict occurred in the region of Georgia called South Ossetia, about a year ago.

There, Russian military forces entered the region in pursuit of acquiring the region

to Russian territory. When many humanitarian organizations protested against this

move, Russia had many arguments to counter their concerns. Russia stated that in

the past South Ossetia had already been part of the Russian Empire, and that much

of Russian culture was still present in that area. Russia also felt that the region was

too poor to survive on its own. In Russia’s opinion the region needed a strong nation

to take care of it. Although Russia’s arguments seemed suitable, the United States

fought the Russians off to keep South Ossetia with Georgia.

This ethnic conflict does not follow the common pattern, because a vast

majority of the South Ossetians didn’t have a problem with their takeover. Usually

when a distinct culture is forced to be a part of an entirely separate nation, much

anger can be expected. However in this case, the South Ossetians didn’t bother to

complain, because of their miserable situation. Even though they have a distinct

culture, many of them appeal for a Russian passport simply because this ensures

them a bigger paycheck. The young and talented workforce immigrates to Russia

and works there, due to better prospects. In this particular conflict, the culture that

was being oppressed didn’t seem to mind being oppressed. If it weren’t for the
United States who was driven by its principles, South Ossetia wouldn’t belong to

Georgia anymore.
