Art Tour as an Alternative Learning Experience in Humanities
A Reflection by Niko T. Manalili

Angono, Rizal was a known place for their “Higantes Festival” during November in honor of
their patron St. Clement. I was in preschool when I first went there and the only thing that I remember
was a crowd marching with the bands and the giants. It was enormous and fascinating that everyone
cheers and celebrate their feast. It was only this year that I have discovered that it was also a center of
art and culture. Sir Saguinsin, has liberated us from extravagant world of innovation to an existing
reality of art and culture. That's why we became human in humanities course.

I was really excited about the tour in Angono. After the discussion about the paintings and
sculptures, I have decided that I should really come to witness the art center of the Philippines. It was a
home town of the two national artist, namely Lucio San Pedro and Carlos “Botong” Francisco. The
paintings of Francisco in FEU has took me for a while to realize that these arts worth a lot for a big
name. FEU as an Cultural Oasis according to Beth Ocampo was a truth. Truly, masterpieces of Botong
and other artist was exemplary beautiful. That's we I don't want to miss our tour.

We can't just talk about arts in lecture because the true appreciation of an art is by being there,
experiencing the true form of art, a language of our culture. They always say that experience is the best
teacher, ergo we should experience it to nourish not only our mind and our heart but also our soul. I
was amazed how Sir Saguinsin make a move on having an educational tour. The idea of our professor
was quite doubtful for a college student yet it has succeeded for years. The cave paintings, sculptures
and the church are some of the things that I'm excited to see. I don't want to say any expectations but
I'm sure I'll be learning at the same time enjoy the trip.
