Costs of medical services


Health care in Slovakia is free of charge for all citizens, this includes funding for treatments abroad.
Foreigners will be treated free of charge only if they suffer from a life threatening condition.
Procedures which are not considered necessary such as plastic surgery and abortions are not free.

Hospital types
Hospitals are classified into 3 types according to their size and facilities. The amount of government
funding is determined this way.
• Type 1 – Hospitals with polyclinics
50,000 inhabitants
Facilities include departments of Surgery, internal, pediatric medicine
• Type 2 – Hospitals with polyclinics
150,000 inhabitants
Has more departments and equipment such as a CT scanner, angiogram
• Type 3 – Faculty hospitals
500,000 inhabitants
Plastic surgery, burn victim unit, neurosurgery...
Faculty hospitals where originally intended for the university hospitals but are now being divided
between universities and nursing schools.
