Unit 2 Equations Day 11 Lesson: Video Outline/Storyboard 54 minutes

Objective: Students will create an outline or storyboard for their music video on the Equations Unit.

Standards: Common Core CCSS.Math.Content.8.EE.C.7a : Give examples of linear equations in one variable with one solution, infinitely many solutions, or no solutions. Show which of these possibilities is the case by successively transforming the given equation into simpler forms, until an equivalent equation of the form x = a, a = a, or a = b results (where a and b are different numbers). CCSS.Math.Content.8.EE.C.7b Solve linear equations with rational number coefficients, including equations whose solutions require expanding expressions using the distributive property and collecting like terms. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.8.1 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-onone, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 8 topics, texts, and issues, building on others ideas and expressing their own clearly.

ISTE: NETS Teachers 1: Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity A. Promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness B. Engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources. Teachers 2: Design and Develop Digital Age Learning Experiences and Assessments: A. Design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity. Students 2: Communication & Collaboration

A. Interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing a variety of digital environments and media. Students 4: Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making: B. Plan and manage activities to develop a solution or complete a project. Preparation: Write the journal topic on the board. If at first you don't succeed, you're like everyone else who went on to greatness. -- Patrick Combs. Turn on all PCs Create groups of 3-4 with at least one student who is strong in their musical intelligence in each group Sharpen Pencils Get 10 splitters Headphones for each student Post music video link onto class website Materials: iPad for each student, stylis for each student, PC for each group, pencils, paper, headphones, splitters Anticipatory Set: As students enter the room, have them get their journals out of their student files and begin writing on the journal topic listed on the board; If at first you don't succeed, you're like everyone else who went on to greatness. -- Patrick Combs. Ask for and/or call on a few volunteers to share their journal entries with the class. Direct Instruction: Begin by asking students if they have any questions regarding last nights homework. Correct answers can be found in the teachers edition of the Holt McDougal digital textbook. When answering questions, use the ShowMe app on the iPad that is connected to the overhead projector before moving on to the next lesson. Collect homework. Guided Instruction Teacher will explain that today students will begin a unit project on equations. They will be assigned to groups who will then create a math music video. They will have three days to complete the video. Today they will be creating an outline or storyboard for their video. Videos must focus on at least one major concept taught during this unit on equations. Some examples would be; Solving absolute value equations, how to use the multiplication property of zero, or solving equations with variables on both sides. Each student in the group must participate but they do not all have to be in the recorded portion of the video. The video will be 3-5 minutes long and must include a Credits page at the end that states every group members job for the video. Teacher will place students into their pre-assigned groups.

Teacher will assign each group to one PC and give each group a splitter Each student will get a set of headphones Teacher will have each group go to the class website and click on the Minion that says Math Music Videos. Teacher will explain to students that they are going to watch examples of math music videos. Students will have approximately 8 minutes to watch the videos. After the video, groups will create their outline or storyboard for their video.

Homework Any portion of the storyboard that is not completed in class will need to be completed as homework. Homework also includes studying for the upcoming test. They will need to begin the Study Guide: Review problems 13-19 odd on page 122 and 21-33 odd on page 123. This will be due when they come into class tomorrow.
